  The Fire/Heat Concept in history
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 05-23-2023, 04:02 PM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

'The notion of fire/light/heat/energy is recognized as an integrating element in the pathway of ordering matter and society, and its historical aspects are thoroughly reviewed. Fire is argued to be a philosophical archetype and its role in the early concept of four elements is discussed. The Indian,Arabic and Greek historical bases are mentioned. Alchemy is briefly reviewed as a source of the wider adoption of fire. The era of renaissance and the new age are also included. The message of fire/heat is nowadays focused on the progress of civilization, with the assumption of engines as in-formation transducers based on the conscious exploitation of fire. The role of chaos is emphasized.Overall, a condensed but consistent view is given of the various concepts that emerged during the historical progress of the understanding of heat (noting 61 references).'

"For the past three years, our magnificent Alchemy Exhibit has been a popular display at the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum. We are now ready to begin the construction of its permanent home. The Rosicrucian Alchemy Museum will offer an interactive introduction to the fascinating history of Alchemy (with its origins in Egypt), as well as hands-on demonstrations involving the seven steps of the alchemical process, lab workstations for up to twelve students, and a meditation chamber."

The project examines the histories of yoga, ayurveda and rasaśāstra (Indian alchemy and iatrochemistry) from the tenth century to the present, focussing on the disciplines' health, rejuvenation and longevity practices. The goals of the project are to reveal the entanglements of these historical traditions, and to trace the trajectories of their evolution as components of today's global healthcare and personal development industries.

  David Chaim Smith
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 05-19-2023, 02:57 PM - Forum: Alchemical symbolism and imagery - No Replies

David Chaim Smith was born in 1964 in Queens, New York. His early career was as a visual artist throughout the 1980s. In 1990 he began an immersion into the root sources of Alchemy and the Hermetic and Hebrew traditions of the Kabbalah. In 1996 he abandoned visual art for a total dedication to spiritual practice, from which came a unique blend of practical mysticism and creative innovation. This blend coalesced while working with an obscure thirteenth-century text called The Fountain of Wisdom, which he mapped out diagrammatically in notebooks during his ten-year hiatus from visual art. The resulting symbol vocabulary served as the basis for his 2006 return to art, generating the content for several books.

With video interview.

  Isaac Holland's Hand
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 05-17-2023, 08:26 AM - Forum: Alchemical symbolism and imagery - No Replies

The manuscript in the Manly P Hall collection referred to in a previous thread also contains this drawing of the Hand of the Philosophers made famous by Isaac Holland. It seems to be a copy of the illustration half way down the page in Adam's essay on this subject:

The hand is followed by a short poem:

  Music by Robert Fludd
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 05-16-2023, 10:18 AM - Forum: News - Meeting - Events - No Replies

"Robert Fludd (1574-1637) is the author of more than twenty philosophical, medical and scientific works. Music occupies a central place in his writings, yet the music that appears in his discussion of the harmony of the universe (macrocosm) and the harmony of man (microcosm), as well as his substantive writing on music theory and organology, is ‘silent’ - a symbolic and theoretical phenomenon only. Fludd, however, was also a performer and composer. Ten trios by Fludd dating to the first half of the seventeenth century have survived from a single source. Until recently, these pieces could not be heard or played, having lain hidden in a manuscript in New Haven , CT, for many years. Hearing Fludd's imaginative chamber music will offer listeners new insights into Fludd's bold musical philosophy and the striking imagery of his publications."
