"Three figures are shown in a well-lit room in front of an open window. In the background is a cabinet full of glassware. Centrally, a seated alchemist in a physician's red cap with fur trim holds a flask in his right hand and leans with his left on a table and an open astrological book."

Alchemical Art - the Precursor to Surrealism
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 10-31-2023, 01:06 PM - Forum: Alchemical symbolism and imagery - No Replies

by Madelyn Kenney

"The alchemical arts date back as far as between the first and third centuries AD, but its purpose within mysticism and the quest for renewable gold began in the 1300s. Alchemical art was a process that utilized the experimentation and observation of simple metals like sulfur and mercury manifest alongside inner exploration and development. In this time period, the sciences were considered to still be an artistic and spiritual endeavor. In Medieval Europe, alchemy was referred to as “The Great Art.” because it acted as an intersection between the arts, sciences, and cultural expression."

Alembic found at Von Everstein Castle in Poland
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 10-31-2023, 09:44 AM - Forum: News - Meeting - Events - No Replies

"...archeologists also recovered an alembic – a vessel used for the purposes of alchemical studies and experiments – as well as a fragment of a pocket sundial which may also have belonged to the count [Georg Kaspar von Everstein or Eberstein]. He had reportedly been considered an eccentric during his lifetime, leading the researchers to hypothesize he may have developed an interest in alchemy."

Fiction: The Alchemical Adventures of a Daoist Immortal
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 10-31-2023, 09:30 AM - Forum: Reviews and book notices - No Replies

"KIn this seventeenth-century Chinese novel, Han Xiangzi, best known as one of the Eight Immortals, seeks and achieves immortality and then devotes himself to converting his materialistic, politically ambitious Confucian uncleHan Yu (a real historical figure)to Daoism. Written in lively vernacular prose interspersed with poems and songs, the novel takes its readers over vast distances across China, to the heavens, and into the underworld. This is the first translation into any Western language. Yang Erzeng (fl. 15901602) was a writer and publisher from the city of Hangzhou in southeastern China. Philip Clart is associate professor of religious studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia."
