"Ralph Metzner first wrote about alchemy when he was in his early 30s. He included a chapter on alchemy in his book Maps of Consciousness, which was published in 1971. In the latter few years of his life he recorded his thoughts on some 36 alchemical terms. Over an arc of some 50 years, Ralph worked on the practice of using alchemical processes for inner transformation. This volume of alchemical musings combines his earliest writing on alchemy with his last writings on alchemical terms. Explore the alchemical musings and metaphors in this volume that bookends his adult lifetime. This collection of musings is an alchemical transmutation of his lifelong opus into gold."

"Alchemical Process"
"I like to think of some of my paintings as something akin to Yantras, which are visual devices used in meditation and healing (in Ayurveda for example). These Yantras are employed to fix the gaze on a central point (called the bindu), and practice seeing and engaging with a field emanating around that point. It’s a way also to practice a kind of “seeing” which is expansive, receiving, and tends to be free from “attachment” to what is seen. I like to think of this series of paintings called Alchemical Process Abstract in a similar way, as a kind of meditation device. They are also meant to depict a dynamic process of alchemical transformation, starting with the material prima (the chaotic swirl of colors compressed in the upper chamber) and arriving at the philosopher’s stone, or the “gold". And as the Alchemists warned, "Aurum Nostrum Non Est Aurum Vulgi" (Our Gold is not common Gold)."

"This is the first of a two-part series that will explore the history of Chinese alchemy. We'll look at the most important names of alchemists and the works they produced. Hard to believe people ingested toxic heavy metals as long as they did to achieve immortality."

Part II here:
"For this Milestone Episode in CHP history, we finish off our overview of the history of Chinese alchemy. Top billing this time will be the biggest name in the industry, Ge Hong. Other notable alchemists and alchemical works will be introduced up to the Ming, followed by a Lightning Round of emperors who died by alchemical poisoning."
