"Using archives and image databases, James Gardner’s practice looks to medieval and premodern documents to consider the ways in which images can be linked with cognitive processes. Lately, he’s been interested in how monastic cultures or other “Western esoteric traditions” used certain mnemonic images and figures to help along cognitive tasks like oration, liturgical practice, or symbol building. Looking closer, it gets quite strange as these mnemonic systems get tied into subjects like astral magic, hermetic philosophy, and even contemporary neuroscience."

"This week on Herbal Radio, we are joined by the Earth-centered herbalist who bottles the alchemical intelligence of plants through the spagyric process, Mo Judith! In animism, nothing is inanimate and all things on Earth have a soul. This belief guides Mo's spagyrics company, Aura La Voura. Tune in to this Herbal Radio episode to learn how animism and alchemy created the foundation for modern-day science through exploration and creativity."

"The 16th-century Italian composer and music theorist Gioseffo Zarlino imagines the four voices of Renaissance counterpoint in terms of the four elements of earth, water, air, and fire. It’s an interesting example of the power of metaphysical thinking even at a time when music was being aggressively secularized, rationalized, and codified into systems of rules and norms. Zarlino’s scheme is a fun lens through which to hear Renaissance counterpoint; it could also be fruitful as a generative idea for composing or improvising, with the four elements being more flexibly conceived as generalized models of musical behavior, without necessarily being strictly tied to register. And what would be the role of the elusive fifth element — “aether,” the alchemical quintessence — in such a musical conception?"

"A snake encircles a luminous crescent moon, its head close to its tail. This is a reference to the sacred symbol of Ouroboros. Often associated with alchemy, mythology and mysticism, it embodies the eternal cycle of life, death and rebirth, symbolising renewal, infinity and the interconnectedness of all things. Another prominent sacred element in the center of the artwork - Sri Yantra - is a geometrical diagram from the tantric tradition in India is used for the worship of deities in temples and at home. Sri Yantra consists of 9 interlocking triangles - four upward ones which represent Shiva, and five downward ones representing Shakti. It is often an aid in meditation, used for the benefits given by their occult powers."

"In the fading ink of ancient manuscripts lies a treasure trove of forgotten knowledge. These historical documents, often dismissed as mere mysticism, may actually contain the keys to unlocking unknown compounds. Recent chemical analyses suggest that the substances indicated within these texts could lead to groundbreaking discoveries in material science. What secrets could these alchemical recipes unveil?"
