Description : This Brazilian Majors only deck has vibrantly coloured pen drawings. Some of the lines show some overdrawing, as if the images were first drawn in pencil then inked in. Each card is associated with a curative herb. Thus the Magician has Rosemary, the Empress has Digitalis and the Emperor is a species of Verbena. The name 'Ceridwen' might suggest that this deck reflects Celtic mythology, but this does not appear to be the source. Rather, this deck seems based around healing plants.

Description : Sold through the Dollar Tree low price stores in the USA. Designed by Jon Stetson, an american charismatic celebrity psychic and the medium and spirtualist John Michael Hilford. It seems likely that a graphics artist actually drew the images. The deck is printed in only three block colours yellow, red and black with half-toned block colours to add a grey and a buff colour. The images are simple but very direct and engaging, in cartoon or tattoo style. Although this has 78 card these are not the conventional set of Minors.
22 Majors.
28 Minor pip cards 1-7 of the four suits.
20 Court cards Ace, Page, Kight, Queen and King of each suit.

Description : In 2003-2004 HBO produced a television series called Carnivàle, which was a very dark and almost surreal melodrama incorporating tarot images in its opening credits and a fortune teller as one of its main characters.
In 2004 they decided to issue a tarot deck as a promotional item. This has no relationship to the tarot imagery used in the TV show and are simple oval mask like faces.
In the Major arcana the eye on the right bears a symbol associated with the tarot trump, while with the Minors the eye on the left holds a symbol for the suit.
The creators of this tarot had probably not even seen the television show as they base their designs on carnival mask forms, whereas the show is about a traveling circus.

Description : Michael Dowers draws on alchemical and other emblematic material found in woodcuts and engravings in early books on alchemy and mystical matters. These have been redrawn, coloured and collaged using Photoshop to create the imagery for each of the cards. It is interesting to identify the source of all the components, however, one does not need to be familiar with the original source material to appreciate their intriguing and delightful artwork. The Tower, for example, uses an illustration of an alchemical furnace from one of the alchemical engravings in the well known Mutus Liber. The artwork could be seen as being similar to that of Robert Place's Alchemical Tarot though he redraws the images in a lean modern style while Michael Dowers create a more dense gathering of symbolism into each card image. Dowers often adopts a non-natural colouring for components of the images. It is issued in a fine solid box.

Description : Created to be used in conjuction with the 2005 role playing game 'Mage the Awakening' in the series World of Darkness Chronicles. A different artist worked on the Majors and on each of the suits. These were Jasmine, Michael William Kaluta, Saana Lappalainen, Stephanie Pui Mun Law, and Vince Locke , though it is not entirely clear who worked on each as two of these groups were not signed. The artwork is of great quality, detail and originality and is integrated across the different artists. The imagery on the Minors does draw on the established Rider-Waite pattern, though the artist for Pentacles does depart largely from this. Supplied in a two compartment box with an extensive well illustrated book.

The artists took the established Rider-Waite deck as an exemplar, but some radically altered the imagery. 85 artists took part in the project.

Description : Although these mimic pen and ink, they were in fact created in a vector graphics program. Each line and point of each curve had to be painstaking entered by hand, thus many hours went into creating the artwork. This painstaking work shows in the smooth flowing curves and the lines that delightfully trail off into the background, however, this is not a technical exercise, but a work full of humour and expression. Jessica Rose Shanahan is able to use the demanding medium of vector graphics to create a deck which communicates directly with the viewer, each card image being a little narrative scene, full of humour and drama.

Description : The limitations of the architectural CAD system, impose a clear geometrical structure on the imagery in the cards, and this is of course the intention of the artist. Thus many forms are broken down into circles, arching forms and structured regular curves. This does not mean that the artist keeps to simple forms, indeed many of the images are very complex. Jordan Hoggard is certainly aware of the qualities and how to use this drawing software. Although architecture stands as an idea behind the conception of this deck, it transcends making simple associations between architectural forms and tarot, and instead the tarot images emerge out of his applying four abstract architectonic principles about how a form stands in its environment. It is a quite fascinating and original way of looking at the tarot. The emblematic Minors to some extent try to follow the Rider-Waite pattern, but often depart far from this.

Description : Apparently, Holly Defount did not initially intend to create a tarot deck, but she set herself the task of creating one piece of original art every day, usually in ACEO format. This discipline eventually took the form of creating a tarot deck, thus it arose 'incidentally'. Many of the cards in the Majors are renamed. Thus, The Magician is now the Red King, The Hierophant - the Cathedral, the Hermit - Blue Buddha, Hanged Man - Eclipse, Tower - Phoenix, and so on. The Suits are Arrows, Roses, Quills, and Oaks. The Princess and Prince of each suit are individually named, thus Princess of Arrows is 'The Messenger', Prince is renamed to 'The Archer'; Princess of Roses is 'The Muse', while the Prince of Roses is 'The Bard'.

Description : The inspiration comes from the poem written 1896 by William Butler Yates with the theme of fairy spirits attempting to charm and lead children into their fairy realm. The first of the four stanzas including the chorus shown below. Knighton has sensitively and subtly translated his imagery into tarot forms, resisting the temptation to label each card with the arcana name. The edition is printed onto a quality textured matt paper in an edition of 500 signed and numbered. The cards are unnumbered and untitled.

Where dips the rocky highland
Of Sleuth Wood in the lake,
There lies a leafy island
Where flapping herons wake
The drowsy water rats;
There we've hid our faery vats,
Full of berrys
And of reddest stolen cherries.

Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

Description : Tribute deck to the horror fantasy fiction writer H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937). This was issued in two editions - one in 1997 of 500 copies and the second in 2002 as an editoon of 1000. The artist was apparently not satisfied by the first printing which was in dark blue and which obscured some of the detail. The 2002 edition was printed in sepia tones. The imagery is almost totally based on the Lovecraft Cthulhu mythos and the traditional tarot elements for the most part consumed by the other imagery, even though it retains the structure of 22 majors and four suits of 14. The suits are Artifacts(Wands), Tomes (Swords), Sites (Pentacles), and Man (Cups). There are no recognisable court cards in the suits.

He describes his deity in 1926 in 'The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath', "Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth". Description : Some photocollage decks can be a bit sloppy. This deck, however, demonstrates the highest skill at collaging. The choice of images and their integration into the final image is exquisite. Gloria Jean must have a phenomenal library of artbooks and a great memory for images, as she is able to find so very appropriate visuals for many of the tarot arcana, in Old master paintings. The additional collaged elements are seamlessly integrated into the final image. Her Three of Pentacles is a clear example of what can be achieved through collage. The images for the Majors follow the tarot archetyes closely, but the pips of the Minors present scenes from the story. Each card also bears a short statement localising the imagery in the plot of the book. Thus the Magician, bears the text "Gandalf commands the material elements of the universe".

Description : The Tarot of Oz is based on the books of the American Frank Baum written in the early decades of the 20th century, and later made famous through the Judy Garland Wizard of Oz film. The artwork for this deck published in 2002 was made by the illustrator David Sexton who also created the Winged Spirit Tarot in 1999 and has worked on a number of comics. The majors depict various characters from the books, beginning with Dorothy as the Fool setting out on her journey along the yellow brick road, then the Wizard of Oz, naturally appears as the Magician. The four suits have emblematic pips, but the imagery does not draw from the Rider-Waite but instead each suit tells the story of one of the major characters in the stories. The Swords tell us about the man of straw, Wands about the history of the cowardly lion, while the tin man is the subject of the suit of Cups, leaving Dorothy as the protagonist in the Stones or Pentacles suit. Sexton seems to have drawn on some of the original illustrations by W. W. Denslow, but presented in a modern form.

Gats are guns (probably the term derives from the Gatling Gun), Duckets are coins, (the Venetian ducat is mentioned in Shakespeare's plays), while Faygos are cups and this is derived from a ghetto soda pop which apparently was often sprayed over the audience during Insane Clown Posse concerts. It has 30 Majors some of which seem to correspond directly to traditional tarot imagery, but numbered and named differently. The Minors are in suits of Fire, Air, Water and Earth. These are structured into six Seniors, six Angels, a King and a card of Demons of each element. The Enochian system is extremely complex with many ramifications,so much so that the 12 page booklet has to have a 10 page glossary. Supplied in a sleeve with a small paperback.

Description : The first edition of line drawings by Vicki Noble was self-published by Karen Vogel in 1981. For the US Games edition these drawings were coloured by Karen Vogel and Lily Hillwomyn.
The imagery was centered in the Great mother Goddess, but is perhaps more eco-feminist and inclusively multicultural than the Dianic or wiccan oriented decks of the Aradia or Daughters of the Moon. There are many references to classical mythology in the Majors, with design elements taken from Greek vases and sculptures as well as Egyptian symbolism. The Minor arcana mirror back to us aspects of various indigenous peoples. Vogel wants to express the idea that in an earlier age the world lived in matriarchal Goddess-worshipping communities which became overrun and destroyed by patriarchal invaders from cold northern climates who brought and imposed the idea of the Father-Sky god. This, perhaps, rather naïve view, resonated with the politics and rhetoric of the 1980’s and we can today see how the creators of this deck could be drawn to such a simplistic world view. Vicki Vogel pictured in her Minor arcana, these peoples associated to the East/Swords as the supposed indigenous peoples of Europe, South/Wands (Africa), West/Cups (Cretan) and North/Discs (pre-Colombian American indians). Although this deck has a strong political tone the expression of its artwork is gentle, with romanticed, inclusive and entirely positive images.

Description : Katenia Keller is a choreographer and dancer. This tarot arose out of her fascination with the ratios and proportions of natural forms. The cards are square and though it does not use figurative forms to depict the arcana, nevertheless, in many cases these are recognisable, even though in a highly abstracted form. She created the series of mandala like paintings on 16x16 inch (406x406 mm)in a former Knights of Pythias Hall, thus both the title of the tarot and the appearance of snakes in a number of the designs. (The Knights of Pythia is a fraternal society following the model of masonry).

Description : The cards are printed on parchment mimicing card on a rather poor quality inkjet and cut out by hand with scissors so that they are a bit irregular. The designs are domestic, autobiographical and full of humour.
The Fool shows a woman being given an ultrasound scan to confirm her pregnancy. The Hanged Man shows a woman upside down on one of those strange exercise machines that people are encouraged to buy, while in the Nine of Pentacle the Mother lies in bed with her child while a cat sleeps on the bedcover. In a strange way the designs for this deck are quite touching, as we are being given a little look into Marybeth Cantwell's life. Her tarot is partly an autobiography. It seems no artifice or cynical manipulation is being pressed on us here.
Poo

Art Medium : Mary Beth Cantwell created the designs and drew the outlines in pen and then had her seven year old son, Jon, colour them in with coloured pencil or felt tip markers - the title card for the deck actually shows this in a little picture.

This is primarily intended as a Jeu de Tarot for the 'Game of Nancy' the complex rules for which are supplied with the deck. The deck has the familiar 22 + 56 structure, though the trumps do not directly link to the tarot archetypes. The pips are in playing card style. The images used in the trumps appear to be based on characters in the computer game. No of cards : 22

Description : The artwork is printed in a soft focus style with few hard edges, giving it an ethereality. Williamson seems primarily inspired by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, thus many of the card designs use Egyptian forms. The 'Morning Star' of this tarot appears to be Lucifer, the Biblical Angel of Light, and many of the images incorporate the interweaving of light. His Fool is a portrait of Lucifer. The imagery is somewhat redolent of the coloured imagery William Blake printed in the margins of his poetry. He comes up with some wonderful new envisagings of the familiar arcana. One is his Hanged Man which delightfully metamorphoses into a bat. The deck comes in a solid red box with a paperback book in which he outlines how his ideas emerged out of his study and experience of the Western Magical traditions.
The cards are numbered only by Hebrew letters.
Art Medium : The medium is difficult to identify and this has been photographed and modified so that the image is slightly out of focus and softened. These are likely to have been paintings in acrylic or oils.

Description : The Holy Card Tarot is a collaged deck assembled by Patty Gallagher in the USA. It draws on some religious paintings of old masters together with some more recent illustrative material from Catholic pamphets. The creator of the deck claims it is a "discovery of the common origin of spiritual themes and an opportunity to create a more inclusive religious symbolism of the West", but as she seems to draw exclusively from Catholic imagery and Saints this is unlikely to achieve that aim.

Description : This tarot is based on Norse mythology, which has a considerable cycle of tales involving giants or Jotnar. Some of these are well known through the Norse myths but others are more obscure. Happily in the booklet which comes with the deck, Raven Kaldera gives us a little detail about each of the giant, and Raven has written (with some others) a more extensive book on the giants The Jotunbok: Working with the Giants of the Northern Tradition also published by Asphodel Press.
This tarot has been created by Raven Kaldera in the USA. Perhaps "conceived and orchestrated" might be a better description of the role of Raven Kaldera, as the images for the deck were created by over twenty different individuals, which are neatly described collectively as "Many Hands".

Description : First published in the December 1966 issue of Esquire Magazine as illustrations to "The Awful Vista of the Year: the Fantod Pack" (along with another short story "Chthonian Christmas"). The story by Gorey is published under the pseudonym of Madame Groeda Weyrd (an anagram of his name). This is more a cynical comment on the tarot, and the images and their titles have no association to traditional tarot images. A limited and signed edition was published by Gotham Book Mart in 1995. Gorey who was born in 1925 and died in 2000 wrote over 100 books, many of which were illustrated with his drawings.

Description : The title of the Wild Unknown Tarot referred to a line from the 1975 Bob Dylan song 'Isis' - "So I cut off my hair and I rode straight away, For the wild unknown country where I could not go wrong". The Wild Unknown is also the name of their home which is a retreat and centre for their band, 'The Family Band'. There are no human figures depicted in this deck, only objects, trees, plants and a menagerie of reptiles, birds and animals. The artwork is created in fine pen drawings, subtly coloured in small areas with watercolour, thus leaving the images to impact on us primarily as pen drawings. The deck comes in a strong box.

Description : This tarot focuses on the Bram Stocker vampire theme. The suits thus are Stakes (second death is final), Blood (life everlasting begins with the blood), Fangs (the dead are ever hungry) and Coins (human loyalty can be bought with gold). The Majors each have a subtitle making a reference to the underlying ‘vampire’ mythology and many are re-named to fit into the vampire agenda. The artwork is in the style of a graphic artist who does advertisements for newspapers or magazines. It is well executed with bold black outlines, strongly coloured areas with much use of fades and merges. Though it was done on a computer it mimics the style of airbrushed graphics. Some of the Majors are renamed. Thus Chariot to Hearse, Strength to Dracul, Justice to Vengence.

Kabbalist's Tarot
Artist : Susan Arnsten-Russell

No of cards : 78
Limited Edition :
Height : 125
Width : 98
Shape :
Description : A prototype of the unpublished Kabbalist's Tarot created in 1999 by the american artist Susan Arnsten-Russell, printed on an ink jet printer. Using delicate coloured pencil she has created a tarot strongly based on kabbalistic ideas. Each of the 78 cards bears a frame, on the left side of which is a tree of life glyph with the relevant 'path' coloured in gray. The Wheel of Fortune is rather fine, using the image of the spinning wheel.
For her minor arcana, she uses the extended Tree of Life as first codified by Warren Kenton (Z'ev ben Shimon Halevi), in the left side of the frame. This codes to the four traditional elements (and thus the tarot suits) with the ten sephiroth (the pip cards) for that respective element and four courts to key sephiroth. It might seem a complex abstract system, but it is at root quite simple. Her designs for the pips are remarkable in that she shows the Tree of life from different perspectives with the image she has created for this card (based on the emblematic imagery used in the Rider-Waite minors) shown on its sephira which is brought to the foreground through the perspective. It is a truly remarkable effect.

Description : The Majors, which are renamed, do not reflect the established tarot images, though some clearly parallel these. Thus Dreamer is close to the conception of the Fool, Nurturer to the Empress, Shaman to the Hierophant, but most others do not seem to relate to the established archetypes. The Majors are all subtitled with the name of a plant - wild rose, cinquefoil, elder, peppermint, etc,
The Minors have suits Feathers, Waves, Stone and Flame. They have emblems but these have no connection at all with the conventional emblems in the Rider-Waite Minors. The Minors are subtitled with various abstract ideas - discrimination, discipline, balance, freedom, etc.

Description : The artwork of the Majors are creative reworkings through line drawings of the established tarot arcana. The Minors clearly draw on the Rider-Waite emblems but much modified and often concealed in complex imagery. The suit of Swords has an Egyptian theme, Cups appears to be populated by figures in 18th century French costume, Coins seems to link to early decades of the Twentieth century with some Deco elements to the figures, Staves is difficult to read, but incorporates various knights in armour and links to the mediaeval period.
The cards are in laminating pouches.
Art Medium : The Majors are pen drawings in a thin translucent sepia ink, with some solid dark areas. The suits are simpler drawings but with more painted areas. Coins favour a light green colour, Swords have more reddish tones, Cups have blue painted elements, and Staves have yellow.
