| What is Sulfur? |

"Medieval alchemists elevated sulfur to one of their three fundamental principles (tria prima), alongside mercury and salt. To these early chemists, sulfur represented the soul, combustibility, and masculine energy. Its alchemical symbol—a triangle atop a cross—became known as “Satan’s Cross” due to religious associations with hellfire. Despite these mystical overtones, alchemists’ experiments with sulfur laid crucial groundwork for modern chemistry."

"Dark, therefore, is an exoteric meditation on the Hermetic view of the world. Hermes was the Greek name of the ancient Egyptian deity known as Thoth. In antiquity, it was believed that he was a real person who helped humanity develop civilization, including medicine, written language, alchemy and astrology. Dark features several references to the Emerald Tablet, also known in Latin as the Tabula Smaragdina, which is a part of the Hermetic writings reputed to contain the secrets of creation. A painting depicting the Emerald Tablet by Heinrich Khunrath from 1606 is seen in multiple places throughout the series, including tattooed on the back of one of the characters."

"This post is a heart-centered exploration of spiritual alchemy through witnessing and action. We’ll uncover the roots of witnessing, challenge its misinterpretations, and illuminate how grounding in the body brings transformation home. Whether you’re navigating your own crucible or tending someone else’s, this journey is for you. Moreover, the Integrated Path to Awakening (TIPA) course offers a path to practice this alchemy, starting with grounding. Let’s dive in."

"Alchemy originated in ancient Egypt and evolved through Greek, Islamic, and medieval European traditions as a hybrid system of material experimentation, symbolic language, and spiritual transformation. Far from mere proto-chemistry, it was a coded guide to psychological restructuring — using metals, elements, and cosmic symbols to map and manipulate the self. During the Enlightenment, alchemy was dismissed as superstition and fractured into modern chemistry and esoteric mysticism. Later, Romantic thinkers and occultists like Jung reinterpreted it as metaphor, obscuring its original function: a practical system for dissolving inherited values, restructuring cognition, and achieving internal sovereignty through symbolic operations encoded in secrecy."

"The alchemical laboratory is one of the most important birthplaces of modern science. Yet it remains a relatively understudied topic. This is due to the scarce historical record of these places which-before laboratories became institutionalized-tended to be makeshift and multipurpose spaces. Thus an interdisciplinary approach is needed to approach this topic central to the history of experimental knowledge production. This article serves as an introduction to the proceedings of the international symposium 'Alchemical Laboratories. Texts, practices, material relics' held in February 2020 in Vienna and Oberstockstall."
