The Last Sorcerers: Alchemy to the Periodic Table
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 08-07-2024, 09:11 AM - Forum: Reviews and book notices - No Replies

"They started with four: earth, air, fire, and water. From these basics, they sought to understand the essential ingredients of the world. Those who could see further, those who understood that the four were just the beginning, were the last sorcerers – and the world's first chemists."

Jo Herlihy - Alchemy: A Search for Truth
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 08-06-2024, 05:27 PM - Forum: Reviews and book notices - No Replies

"From the early days of the Roman Empire through to the early 1700s, why did some of the most creative minds turn to alchemy? The search for how to make gold through this experimental practice will have been, without doubt, very alluring. But what else did people hope to discover? This is the story of the people, the books, the controversies and the dangers surrounding the secretive art of alchemy and the search for truth explored through the history of ideas, philosophy and religion. What emerges is a surprising story about the many inter-weaving influences, heresies and orthodoxies that shaped Western Philosophy and Science."

  Voynich paper by Jessica Scott
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 08-06-2024, 12:36 PM - Forum: Alchemy texts - No Replies

"The following paper reveals that the Voynich Manuscript is a Latin celestial herbal book of hours to treat ailments according to an individual's birth chart and zodiac sign. It describes that the Son of God provides treatments through ordinary garden plants' flowers and seeds. It contains two lists. One for instructions and one to list the main sources of these treatments. Additionally, it mentions two important monastic tenants and Christian commandments of being stewards to the earth and its plants and animals. The plant on folio 65r is identified."

  San Leo
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 08-06-2024, 09:42 AM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

"But to us common (sic) people, the most fascinating aspect of San Leo’s history is, undoubtedly, its association with the enigmatic figure of Count Cagliostro. Born Giuseppe Balsamo in Palermo in 1743, Cagliostro was a self-styled magician, alchemist, and healer who gained notoriety across Europe. His flamboyant lifestyle and mysterious persona made him a subject of fascination and controversy. In 1791, Cagliostro was imprisoned in the fortress of San Leo by the Inquisition, accused of heresy and other crimes. He spent his final years in the fortress, and his legacy continues to intrigue visitors to this day...Visitors can explore the cells where prisoners were held, including the one that confined the famous Sicilian alchemist (shown below)."

  The History of Chemical Laboratories
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 08-05-2024, 10:03 PM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

"Chemical laboratories have existed since the late sixteenth century. Two basic designs have dominated this history: a furnace-centred laboratory based on earlier alchemical workshops up to around 1820 and then a design based on the use of the Bunsen burner with benches and bottle racks since the 1850s."
