  Dictionary of Taoist Internal Alchemy
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 11-24-2024, 06:54 PM - Forum: Reviews and book notices - No Replies

"This dictionary offers a unique perspective on the vast and varied terminology of Taoist Internal Alchemy (Neidan). Drawing on major original texts and premodern lexicons, it provides translations, definitions, and usage examples for over a thousand terms common throughout the tradition.
A comprehensive index of English equivalents allows readers to easily locate the corresponding Chinese terms. Beyond serving as a reference for those reading, studying, or translating Neidan texts, the dictionary's entries offer glimpses into the rich imagery and poetic language of Internal Alchemy."

  Alchemical Jewellery & Music Fusion
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 11-22-2024, 12:22 PM - Forum: Alchemical symbolism and imagery - No Replies

"The spark for Alchemy came from Mia Main, who brought the idea to ÜNAM as a way to bridge their two art forms. Working together, they split the project into two teams, each led by one of them, with ÜNAM creating an original track and Mia designing a jewelry piece that captures the spirit of alchemy. From there, it was all about letting other artists make it their own: 13 artists were given the core track or jewelry piece as inspiration, along with an assigned element—fire, water, air, earth, or quintessence—and asked to reimagine it through their own lens."

  Allegorical Iconography of Alchemical Furnaces
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 11-22-2024, 10:33 AM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

Sergei Zotov

Allegorical Iconography of Alchemical Furnaces in 16th and 17th Century Manuscripts

"In many illustrated alchemical manuscripts one may find images of furnaces. Starting from the sixteenth century they are often depicted allegorically as well as vials, alembics, and other laboratory utensils. Furnaces were sometimes symbolized by characters connected with fire: hell mouth, demon, or dragon. In other cases, alchemical ovens were depicted as buildings due to their similar form. A tree was also a symbol of an alchemical oven. These iconographical types connected alchemy with something significant outside of alchemy: be it technology, religion, or mythology. This paper argues that the sources for such allegorical imagery could lie in manuals on military technology such as Bellifortis or De re militari."

Alchemy and Sacred Geography in the Mediaeval Deccan
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 11-21-2024, 07:17 PM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

"In the course of my research on the history of Rasasastra, I learned, in the early 1980's, from a colleague who had visited the temples of Alampur, that the iconography of this Saivite site as well as local traditions pointed to the former presence of alchemists in this region of the Deccan. In order to verify the grounds for this information, I proceeded with research that was as much philological and historical as it was archaeological and anthropological."

  Video: Forshaw on Khunrath
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 11-21-2024, 07:11 PM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

A Not-So-Lazy Henry: Heinrich Khunrath in his Laboratory - Peter Forshaw (Amsterdam)

"In 1595 Heinrich Khunrath of Leipzig (1560-1605), ‘Doctor of Both Medicines and Faithful Lover of Theosophy’, published the first edition of his elaborately illustrated Amphitheatrum sapientiae aeternae (Amphitheatre of Eternal Wisdom), with an improved and expanded posthumous edition published in 1609. There, and in other works, like On Primaterial Chaos (1597) and On the Fire of the Mages and Sages (1608), he promotes his belief in the necessity of jointly practising a threefold combination of Physico-Chymia, Divine Magic and Christian Cabala. Khunrath’s best-known engraving, the Oratorium-Laboratorium appears in many works as an example of the early modern laboratory space, but Khunrath has often been dismissed as an alchemical mystic, rather than someone with hands-on experience. Here we shall take a closer look at the alchemist in his laboratory, the kinds of alchemy that he practised, his interest in technological design, how he communicated his ideas, and a few examples of how his laboratory work was received."
