This black and white deck (pen & ink; photography) features cards by Lizzie Brown, Tee Corinne, Liza Cowan, Alix Dobkin, P. K. Ellis, Sharon Fernleaf, Catherine Garden, mary Lee George, Paula Gottlieb, Brenda Gray, Kath Hartley, River Lightwomoon, Michelle Meizner, Ruth Mountaingrove, Carol Newhouse, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, Billie Potts, Sudie Rakusin, Rayne, Ruth A. West, Jenna Weston, and Kate Zehnter.
The Fool is numbered both 0 and 22 and is labeled "Innocents." I've scanned the first 3 cards: I Witch, II Sybil, III Matriarch, plus the back of a card.
Let me know if there's interest and I'll add a few more scans.
The deck was published in 1984 in Bearsville, N.Y., by Hecuba's Daughters, Inc.
Some cards have two versions (VI Lovers, XIV Art, XV Birth/The Horned One, 2 of Cups, 3 of Wands. The deck contains 83 cards and the court cards are Child, Amazon, Companion and Queen. Some photography was used. Some cards include astrological symbols. In the spirit of the deck, "Mars" was renamed "Kali."
A number of contributors are listed as well as "special support"; these are listed on a single sheet with card meanings that came with the deck in lieu of a LWB.
The deck included 3 blank cards which leads me to suspect that the intention may have been to offer users a chance at adding a card.

That looks JUST like my 78 + several extra cards "New Women's Tarot". Before Comparative went under, a number of us were comparing cards as there were several versions, some with more cards than others - I am lucky enough (along with one other person) to have the MOST complete set, at 86 cards + 4 blanks.
I think I could still find the discussion of this, though the scans we all posted are gone now.

It would be interesting to check. Mine came with an explanatory sheet from the creators so I am certain of the names of the people involved (and the name of the deck, of course).

I have 86 and 4 blanks too. The backs of mine are purple, not pink, and the sheet that comes with them calls them "Amazon Tarot" - is bright pink paper - no date but price tag of $13.50.

Actually, now I look, mine aren't a match for yours!
My deck starts with two versions of 0/XXII Innocents - one is drawn and one is photographic, then 0one version of Witch which is photographic but NOT the version yours has!
Sybil is the same, the Matriarch is different, hand drawn but not the same as yours.
Oh odd.
Deck sheet say published by Elf and Dragon Press collective
ETA - Tarot Garden info suggests I have first edition 1979. You have second edition 1984.
Sad we're not in a position to set both decks side by side to see the changes they made, and ponder why.
Nice thread, thank you

Yes- mine says Elfs and Dragons, too. And gives BOTH deck names. And is 1979.
When I get back from not being here, I will dig up everything I can.
My witch is very different from yours, and my backs are a LOT darker. Sounds as though I have the same one as PW

Ah - I also recall something else. This edition included Susun Weed, who later parted company with the group and created her own deck. I think there are some other artist changes too, but a I say - no time right now.

Interesting information coming up. If I have time this evening, I'll try to scan and post the sheet that came with the deck.

Sadly Susun Weed's deck is not easily (if at all !) available; and I thought I heard that she had died a while ago now. But I can't find any proof of that, so I may have imagined it - or - well, you know the internet...!
There are two listed on a website of woman's decks as pamphlets:
1982 - Susun Weed, Transparent Tarot (self-published pamphlet)
1983 - Susun Weed, Goddesses of the Tarot (self-published pamphlet)
Kaplan shows a deck of hers called the Transparent Tarot, dated 1985, and she mentions it in one of her websites:

I'll scan my sheet as I assume it differs from Paris'. It also came with a pink one which is so hard to read I'd already photocopied it ! I'll also put in the two Innocents from mine, Witch and Matriarch. I haven't time to dig up the old comparative stuff just now, but I will try later. Like after Christmas, probably !

The trick is, make the post with one image, then edit the post and you can add more.

Thanks, folks .. I was just last week looking for information about which edition I have, and couldn't find any, and now this has appeared!
I have the same one as Gregory and Pathwalker, so I guess it's the 1979. I got mine used though, and it didn't have any info sheet with it.
Edited to add:
There are five blank cards... But it seems someone started doodling on one if them
Edited again to add: there are 86 cards, plus the blanks.
The following cards have two different versions:
Innocents (0/22), 6 lovers, 11 justice, 15 (one is called 'birth', the other is 'horned one', 19 sun, 3 of pentacles, 10 of pentacles, 5 of wands.Last edited on Sat Dec 6th, 2014 09:11 pm by Rasa

I can't find the original thread on this deck...I remember contributing to it when I got my copy because the details regarding the deck were so confusing - actual number of cards, year of release, etc.

It was on comparative. You and I battled it out (co-operatively) big time. We had more cards than anyone else. I loved that...
Mine was printed around 1979 - it was bought used in 1983 in New York, where the store told me that was its approx. date - and the store was the long lamented Magickal Childe, so I believe them - and has 86 cards and 4 blanks. It was from before Susun Weed dropped out. Collated by Billie Potts.
"Deck omits all male archetypes. Mix of photographic and hand rendered images, and some cards are horizontal rather than vertical. Queen and companion replace king and queen; amazon and child replace knight and page. This deck is very similar to a later one, the New Amazon deck, created after Susun Weed had left the group.)
I wonder if we can find the photo database you and I both contributed to.

There's no problem with its name as such - there were two, depending which edition you had - and also as I recall on occasion the second edition showed up with the original name) New Women's (Elf and Dragons Press 1979) and Amazon (Hecuba's Daughter). I do actually own a copy. The problem comes with which version one has, as there were a variety of cards added and removed at various times, not least when Susun Weed left the project. Sadly I still can't find the old thread on Comparative.

Agree with gregory. We did a deck comparison - we seemed to have versions with different numbers of cards.

I even tried wayback - but because it was a "private" group, it doesn't come up.

Susan Weed's not dead, I watch her on YouTube all the time. Here's a link to a video of hers making a comfrey infusion with her co-host and granddaughter Norma Jean. https://youtu.be/uPMLRZCGPjU

Thank you for posting about this deck, Amazon Tarot, and the images. I bought this deck back in 1978. Do you know if it ever came with a box? I have the original instruction sheet, too. But can't remember what, if any, 'container/box' it came in, and would be interested in an image of it for my collection. Ms. Max Attached Image (viewed 70 times):

I bought mine in the early 80s; it was wrapped in that same instruction sheet, with an elastic band round the lot.
