"Psychiatrist Carl Jung and historian George R. S. Mead studied the Emerald Tablet between the last quarter of the 19th century and the first of the 20th. Surrealist poet André Breton included the paraphrase “What is below is like what is above, and what is above is like what is below”, from the second verse of that work, in an essay published in 1942. Thirty-two years later, Brazilian singer-songwriter Jorge Ben Jor published a book entitled A Tábua de Esmeralda with twelve songs of alchemical and theosophical themes. In 1977, after two years of work, French composer Manfred Kelkel completed Tabula Smaragdina, a ballet in which he merged the score with visual projections of esoteric motifs that turned his piece into what he defined as “metamusic”.
