Pixnote Pixel Art: Rosarium Philosophorum
#1
"Alchemical illustrations express chemical processes through symbolic imagery. 'Rosarium Philosophorum' (The Rosary of the Philosophers) was a key 16th-century alchemical text, depicting the 'chemical wedding' (union of different substances) as a marriage between king and queen—transforming scientific processes into allegorical images. The ouroboros (serpent eating its tail), the hermaphroditic rebis, substances transforming in retorts—these bizarre images were 'experiment manuals' for medieval people but look like fantasy literature illustrations to modern eyes. Alchemy's ultimate goals were creating the Philosopher's Stone and transmuting base metals to gold, but the process accumulated practical chemical knowledge (sulfuric acid, nitric acid, aqua regia) that became the foundation of modern chemistry. Jung reinterpreted alchemical imagery psychologically as 'projections of the unconscious transformation process."
