The Alchemical Imagination - 11th Annual Art and Psyche Symposium
By Limerick School of Art and Design
Apr 18 2026 from 9:30am to 5pm GMT+1
"The Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung dedicated much of the final three decades of his life to alchemical research. In his words “only after I had familiarized myself with alchemy did I realize that the unconscious is a process, and that the psyche is transformed or developed by the relationship of the ego to the contents of the unconscious” (1963, p. ). In a further excerpt, we read:
“Alchemy is rather like an undercurrent to the Christianity that ruled on the surface. It is to this surface as the dream is to consciousness, and just as the dream compensates the conflicts of the conscious mind, so alchemy endeavours to fill in the gaps left open by the Christian tension of opposites” (1944, p. 23).
During this event, our 11th annual Art and Psyche symposium, we explore the relevance of an alchemical sensibility for our times, and of what it means to ‘live alchemically.’ We invite you to a close listening and engagement with our presenters on the topic of The Alchemical Imagination in relation to the challenges of our times."
