Video: Boring history for sleep - The Emerald Tablet
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 12-20-2025, 11:35 AM - Forum: Alchemy texts - No Replies

"Tonight, we open the pages of the legendary Emerald Tablets of Thoth, a text that has haunted the dreams of alchemists, philosophers, and mystics for over a thousand years. Attributed to the Egyptian god of wisdom, Thoth—later known to the Greeks as Hermes Trismegistus—this mysterious artifact contains the foundational maxim of all esoteric thought: "As Above, So Below". We explore how this brief text emerged not from archaeological digs, but from the melting pot of Hellenistic Egypt and the scriptoriums of the Islamic Golden Age."

  Artist: James Gardner
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 12-20-2025, 11:10 AM - Forum: Alchemical symbolism and imagery - No Replies

"Using archives and image databases, James Gardner’s practice looks to medieval and premodern documents to consider the ways in which images can be linked with cognitive processes. Lately, he’s been interested in how monastic cultures or other “Western esoteric traditions” used certain mnemonic images and figures to help along cognitive tasks like oration, liturgical practice, or symbol building. Looking closer, it gets quite strange as these mnemonic systems get tied into subjects like astral magic, hermetic philosophy, and even contemporary neuroscience."

  The Alchemical Caves of Turin
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 12-16-2025, 01:28 PM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

"Their location is known only by three people all over Europe, who know each other and who do not disclose it to anyone. Three caves, three portals, only three people know the secret, three like the vertices of a triangle, the three as the number of the trinity., a true and fascinating mystery. Over the centuries the hypothesis has been handed down that these portals can be found in the basement of Palazzo Madama or Piazza Castello or perhaps in the Royal Gardens. Elements to support these theses? Almost no one."

  Music: Alchemy and the Elements
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 12-16-2025, 01:15 PM - Forum: Alchemical symbolism and imagery - No Replies

"The 16th-century Italian composer and music theorist Gioseffo Zarlino imagines the four voices of Renaissance counterpoint in terms of the four elements of earth, water, air, and fire. It’s an interesting example of the power of metaphysical thinking even at a time when music was being aggressively secularized, rationalized, and codified into systems of rules and norms. Zarlino’s scheme is a fun lens through which to hear Renaissance counterpoint; it could also be fruitful as a generative idea for composing or improvising, with the four elements being more flexibly conceived as generalized models of musical behavior, without necessarily being strictly tied to register. And what would be the role of the elusive fifth element — “aether,” the alchemical quintessence — in such a musical conception?"

  Uslada: Luna Serpentis
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 12-16-2025, 01:12 PM - Forum: Alchemical symbolism and imagery - No Replies

"A snake encircles a luminous crescent moon, its head close to its tail. This is a reference to the sacred symbol of Ouroboros. Often associated with alchemy, mythology and mysticism, it embodies the eternal cycle of life, death and rebirth, symbolising renewal, infinity and the interconnectedness of all things. Another prominent sacred element in the center of the artwork - Sri Yantra - is a geometrical diagram from the tantric tradition in India is used for the worship of deities in temples and at home. Sri Yantra consists of 9 interlocking triangles - four upward ones which represent Shiva, and five downward ones representing Shakti. It is often an aid in meditation, used for the benefits given by their occult powers."
