Thesis: Anselm Kiefer and the Alchemy of Art
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 06-29-2023, 09:04 AM - Forum: Alchemical symbolism and imagery - Replies (1)

"The thesis explores the work of the contemporary German artist Anselm Kiefer. He has in the past, attracted criticism in Germany because of his insistence on confronting the subject of the Second World War but is as well known for his frequent allusion to Alchemy and the mystical Qabbālāh and Merkaba. The nature of these arcane arts or sciences is briefly examined as well as their relationship to modern science and also to ancient spiritual practices in addition to Jungian psychotherapy. Kiefer’s connection with the artists Peter Dreher and Joseph Beuys is also considered. The unusual scope and scale of his work and his use of unconventional materials seem to provoke questions about his image as a modern alchemist and also what it may mean to practice Art or indeed Alchemy in the twenty-first century."

"The Russian Brothers of the Golden and Rosy Cross mastered and developed various ideas and practices associated with magic, the Kabbalah, astrology, alchemy, hermeticism and theosophy. They tried to combine esoteric teachings from the West with the tradition of Christian mysticism, including orthodoxy, creating an unusual and interesting form of world view."

Rosicrucian Alchemy & the Golden Dawn
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 06-27-2023, 08:49 AM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

By Jean-Pascal Ruggiu.

"Many people, when they think of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, immediately think of "Magic" or "Magick." Others would be surprised to learn that the Golden Dawn is not, nor has it ever been a "Magical" Order. It is rather the Inner Order behind the Golden Dawn, the Ordo Rosae Rubeae et Aureae Crucis (R. R. et A. C.) which has been from the very beginning a depository of the Rosicrucian spiritual tradition. Furthermore, that which today has popularly become known as "Magic" or "Magick" is actually a development of that aspect of the Rosicrucian tradition known as "Theurgy." Prior to the founding of the Inner Order behind the Golden Dawn, Theurgy had never before been the primary focus of the Rosicrucian spiritual tradition, but rather Alchemy instead. Indeed, the Rosicrucian tradition itself grew out of the Alchemical tradition. The true place of Theurgy within the Rosicrucian tradition has always been as a complementary discipline to Alchemy."
