The Black Sun: The Alchemy and Art of Darkness
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 10-28-2024, 09:59 PM - Forum: Reviews and book notices - No Replies

The black sun, an ages-old image of the darkness in individual lives and in life itself, has not been treated hospitably in the modern world. Modern psychology has seen darkness primarily as a negative force, something to move through and beyond, but it actually has an intrinsic importance to the human psyche. In this book, Jungian analyst Stanton Marlan reexamines the paradoxical image of the black sun and the meaning of darkness in Western culture.

The Book on Alums and Salts of Pseudo-Rāzı̄

The Book on Alums and Salts of Pseudo-Rāzı̄: The Arabic and Hebrew Traditions Sources of Alchemy and Chemistry: Sir Robert Mond Studies in the History of Early Chemistry

By Gabriele Ferrario

On Alums and Salts, sometimes attributed to the Persian polymath al-Rāzī, is one of the most influential treatises in the European alchemical tradition. This Arabic alchemical work, produced in twelfth-century al-Andalus, gained wide fame in its Latin translations, and is also represented by a unique and fascinating Hebrew manuscript that includes practical commentary added by its anonymous Jewish compiler. Gabriele Ferrario’s new edition presents both the Arabic and the Hebrew texts, each with a full translation into English. Together, the two editions of On Alums and Salts tell the story of the active acquisition of chemical knowledge, of lexical creativity and ingenuity, and of scientific engagement that crossed chronological, linguistic, cultural, and religious boundaries.

The son of a protestant, who refused to adhere completely to any religious doctrine, Jung studied throughout his life various religious traditions, including Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Gnosticism, as well as esoteric traditions like Alchemy and Astrology. But what inspired Jung to dedicate his entire life to this field and most importantly what gave birth to his profound fascination with alchemy and the esoteric arts? Was Carl Jung a Freemason?

  John Dee's Monas Aequilibris
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 10-26-2024, 06:11 PM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

"In 1564, Dr. John Dee shared with us his mysterious and enigmatic work, the Monas Hieroglyphica. A powerful symbol to remind us that our world is united and complete, even if it seems irreparably fragmented. Dee’s monad is as simple yet powerful today as it was the moment he first depicted it. However, as we perceive our world as an increasingly fragmented reality, we need more and more complex symbols to remind us of its original wholeness. In this essay I will examine one such complex, “modern” symbol. Born of the spirit of its time, this new work knows its place: just as there were more perfect symbols a thousand years before Dee’s, so is the Monas Aequilibris a lesser work compared to his monad."

Joos van Craesbeeck (c. 1605/06 – c. 1660) was a Flemish baker and a painter who played an important role in the development of Flemish genre painting in the mid-17th century through his tavern scenes and dissolute portraits. His genre scenes depict low-life figures as well as scenes of middle-class people. He created a few religiously themed compositions.
