Those of you interested in the Tarot of Frown Strong by Raymond John Armin (apologies for the typo in the title to this post), aka Raymond John Schertenleib, may like to see some images from this unusual deck, which seems only to have been issued to members of the Emin Society. It comes in a wooden box (number 284) and contains 24 cards, made of photos carefully fixed to thick white card, most of which relate to the regular major arcana, but with some more puzzling images that I haven't figured out yet; no numbers provided to help with identifying the sequence. I hope you enjoy them. No date is given, but I imagine it's in the late 1980s because I've also obtained a set of the Gemrod Taro, again in a wooden box (number 275), this time with a card that provides a date: 1988. That deck has 21 cards plus the copyright card. Golden Quest Card size: 4 1/8 x 3 Inches.

I think the previous three images are easy to identify, but I'm less certain about the middle one of these. The first is the Lovers and the last I imagine is the Devil, but the middle is not the Hermit (I'll take a photo when I've a moment).

Here's a view of the box with the Chariot and what I imagine is the Hierophant.

And here's the lid, providing the name of the deck. The card on the left is clearly Strength, but any suggestions for the other image?

I finally got a copy of the Tarot of Frown Strong and was interested to see the variations in names for some of the cards:
1. The Juggler
2. The Priestess
3. The Empress
4. The Emperor
5. The Hierophant
6. Life
7. The Chariot
8. Justice
9. The Searcher
10. The Wheel
11. Strength
12. The Hanged Man
13. The Reaper
14. The Communication
15. The Green Man
16. The Tower
17. The Star
18. The Moon
19. The Sun
20. The Resurrection
21. Nymph of Ability
[0] Negation Card [has 'FOOL' on forehead]

Now I need to go back and look at the Golden Quest and Gemrod; perhaps I can figure out their sequences.

Temperance ? it shares some features with the Frown-Strong Temperance.

Adam's database has some info on the Gemrod:

Hi Gregory, nice suggestion.

Here's a photo of Frown Strong Temperance (The Communication) on the left, the Golden Quest Temperance (?) in the middle and what I take to be the Golden Quest Hermit on the right. They really are interesting and enigmatic cards!

Wow! I'm extremely jealous....
Could that be the Fool beside Strength?

Hi Sumada and Gregory,
Thanks for the replies. To be honest, I'm not sure. I wondered whether it might be the Star too, but there's another image that might be a candidate for that card. There's nothing else that immediately makes me think of the Fool card, so for the time being I'm following Sumada. Some are more obvious, e.g. High Priestess, Empress, Justice, Hanged Man, Tower, Moon, and Sun are all pretty easy to recognise. Others, though, are ... weird!

Here's what I think is probably the Star (on the left) plus two other cards that have me puzzled.

Thanks, Gregory, for the reminder about the previous discussion. If Keen is still around, I'd love to hear more. Am now looking around for any of the Emin Foundation's publications, to see if they help.
The mask in the Fool (?) card threw me too, as did the 24-hour clock in the top right corner.

Crumbs that's MUCH more star, you're right.

Could the other two be sort of Cosmos and - well, I would say Judgment - looks a bit rebirthy.... and there's sort of an angel.

Are there any particular Gemrod cards you'd like to see (providing I can figure out which is which)? There is a copyright card, but I guess I could post one or two? What I imagine is the Magician is interesting in that he's surrounded by 6 of the other cards (oddly, 2 are the same).

LOL! Okay, here's what looks like the Gemrod Death/Reaper card on the left and the Judgement/Resurrection on the right. Enjoy!

An update on my continuing fascination with the cards by the creator of the Frown Strong.
I just received a second set of the Golden Quest Tarot. The previous ones are 24 photographs mounted on solid white card and come in a wooden box. This new set is just the set of 24 small photographs (on Kodak Professional Paper). One card has been repainted, but what I found most interesting is that four cards are extremely different. One is recognisable from the previous deck, but the others are puzzling. If you've any idea of how to identify them, do post a reply!

Okay, here are the cards which are obviously the same theme, the Devil.

Next are two cards which seem to be a similar theme. The one I have mounted on card I describe as 'The Artist'; the second one is perhaps 'The Trapeze Artist'?

Next I'll post images which you've already seen. The first is obviously meant to be the Strength card, but the second puzzles me. I call it 'Pots of Gold' or 'Pots of Treasure', because they seem to be golden pots, filled with jewels?

Finally, here are their replacements in the new photograph paper deck. One is definitely Death, but what's the other? I call it 'Mask'. It's weird to compare them to the previous cards. Are they direct substitutes or just total change of them? I find it hard to see how Strength becomes Mask or Pots of Gold becomes Death (unless you link death with Pluto, Lord of the Underworld, who is associated with riches).
All ideas extremely welcome!!

They're not commercially available. The seller on eBay wrote 'I purchased this set from a former student of the Emin Society in the Netherlands.'
