Inspired by the high-quality images of the Lismon Etteilla II in Sumada's Treasure Box, https://www.flickr.com/photos/sumadas-treasure-box/albums/72157631592690647 I was comparing my two incomplete, tatty copies and saw something I hadn't noticed before: the Three of Cups are slightly different: in the panel beneath the three cups, on the left, you'll see that the face (of a rather mournful looking lion?) in the centre of the circle is upside down; while on the right, it's the right way up. Both decks have the same red back as Sumada's copy, but apparently are from different print-runs. A quick hunt online discovered a deck for sale on Etsy that also appears to have an inverted face.

Does anyone know how many printings there were of individual Lismon decks. Do the Lismon decks all have the same back? And has anyone speculated on the meaning of the small images in all the lower panels? Thanks for your help with this :D

Hullo Peter.

Some time ago, there was a lot of discussion about Lismon Etteilla decks on Aeclectic. Here are a couple of links:

Some of the photos are missing from this thread, but mine are there, along with my commentary:

...and here is a more involved thread that came about some time later:

Hi OnePotato, thanks for the links. I had seen the Cerulean/Mike H exchange, but for some reason not yours. I've read through your posts and the very interesting responses. This is the kind of detail I enjoy! It's my mum's birthday today, so I'll be busy with her on Skype for a while, but will take a few shots of my (tatty, grubby) versions of cards you posted, by way of comparison. Unfortunately the links posted by others in your thread no longer open, but at least I can see your copy. Neither of my decks have boxes or books, neither is complete, but at least there are a few points of interest. I'd be interested to hear which variant you have for the 3 of Cups.

Back soon!

Okay, here are some images to compare with those from OnePotato, plus a couple of other variants. Neither deck is complete, so I don't have a second copy of Ace of Wands, Ace of Coins, or 2 of Swords.

Here are my two versions of card 4 'Le Ciel' (The Sky/Heaven) and 'Les Oiseaux et les Poissons' (The Birds and Fishes). If templates were used for the clouds/sky in card 4, then there may have been replaced over time, or the colourists created their own variants.

Card 8 "Repos" (Rest - or as I saw with amusement somewhere on Google Images "Lady in Teleporter").

Card 10 "Tempérance" undecided dress sense. What looks like a white tunic and red toga on the left has become a scarlet toga, tunic and pale green skirt, perhaps, on the right.

Card 13 "Le Grand PrĂȘtre" (High Priest) - surely a certain amount of irony in the choice of card number for the theme of Marriage? Again, interesting to note the colourists' decisions on how to colour the robe of the man on the right.

Card 15 "Le Magicien ou le Bateleur" (Magician or Juggler). The table-cloth has become part of the Magician's robe in the left image.

Last (but by no means least), Card 17 "La Mort" (Death). Perhaps a template was used for the colouring, but if so, that on the left missed the red cloth draped over Death's right hand.

I'd agree that most of these variants are fairly inconsequential and are simply different colour choices (and care or lack of attention) from the colourists.
The Aces, however, show similar framing differences to those discussed by OnePotato. I haven't compared them exactly with his, but it seems that there were several printings. I wonder how many cards were printed in one batch? I'd also like to know if there are many variant card backs. The ones I've seen are all red, but there seem to be at least two different styles:

1. Checkered backs, like I've shown above
2. Wiggly Worms (Ok, I doubt they called it that ...), as seen on Spielkartenonline
