Science Insights: The History of Alchemy - Paul Ferguson - 10-05-2026

A good general article.

"Alchemy stretches back at least two thousand years and spans nearly every major civilization, from Hellenistic Egypt to medieval Islam to Renaissance Europe and ancient India and China. Far from a single tradition of gold-seekers, it was a sprawling network of practices that blended metallurgy, medicine, philosophy, and spiritual aspiration. Its reputation as mere pseudoscience turns out to be largely a product of eighteenth-century polemics rather than a fair reading of what alchemists actually did, and recent scholarship has dramatically reshaped how historians understand the field’s contributions to experimental science."
