"The third novel in C.S. Lewis’s sci-fi Cosmic Trilogy, That Hideous Strength is a story about Mark and Jane Studdock, a newly-married, rather unhappy couple caught up into the cosmic battle between the N.I.C.E., a technocratic organization working toward world domination, and St. Anne’s, a community of Christians helping Elwin Ransom (the Pendragon heir of King Arthur) battle the demonic powers controlling the N.I.C.E. It is a tale of two cities and in this exploration of its epic narrative, I want to focus on the alchemical symbolism which Lewis introduces as one of the many ways he contrasts the Babelesque City of Man to the Heavenly City of God."
