Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of ancient Egypt before it was conquered by Rome, loved roses and geraniums. Her perfume merchant would have applied a technique similar to Maryka’s – extracting the flowers’ fragrances by placing them on a layer of animal fat, albeit in a much thicker and stickier form."
