Deadline is January 30, 2012  But earlier is good too!

Here is the challenge.

the basic design is the forum fool from the upper left corner.  BUT he is sized up a bit, and then cut into pieces, which each piece then being a card.  each card will contain some black lines, when all the cards are laid in order, the lines are the Forum Fool.

for example, whoever does the fool will get a file, probably a jpeg if I can figure out how to export it.  (or .ai) you put whatever you want on that card, but the basic lines must remain.  it'd be nice if the lines are incorporated into the card design, but it's not necessary.

card size is 2.5 x 4.5, with no borders,  each card must have the card name added to the design somewhere

see diagram below.  the first one is the full deck, the second is an example of what the fool would require.  obviously the 2 files are very different scales.  the full deck will be 15 x 18, individual cards are 2.5 x 4.5

OK. I'll take The Hermit. We do whatever we like in there as long as the lines show, right?

The Moon please...

Don't forget that there'll have to be a bleed if the cards are borderless - ie. we'll have to take our images at least 3mm over the edge of the finished card size - more if the printer needs more.

Wheel of Fortune please.

This is an interesting concept, yet could end up looking a bit chaotic, but I'll give it a go.

I am going to talk to the printers and see what they say.  but for now, don't plan on bleed.

and for those who don't know what 'bleed' is, don't worry about it!

Hierophant, please? I'm not quite sure I have a good understanding of the requirements, but I need a card with ...not so many lines. :D

ETA: Yes, template, please - pm me for e-mail addy.

ETA2:  Are the lines supposed to be visible in our cards and actually made part of the representation, or just an overlay to whatever we do?

Sorry if these are dumb questions....:f

I also want to join in, but I am still not sure which card I would want to take. I am doubting between Strength, Wheel of Fortune and Temperance. I hope I can make my decision tonight.

The Moon. Darker than the others so far, but the lines do still show...

Pen

Edited to add that uploading this has made the colour appear very bright (which s'not) - I s'pose it's something to do with the CMYK file, which will be the one printed. Not sure whether to adjust the jpg to appear closer to the original or to leave it.

I've uploaded an RGB one instead of the CMYK file and the colour is OK now...:D

I'm in the States and I see it fine. It's terrific. Let me try uploading it in case it's holding a grudge from 1776.

I'm just copying the image from the screen as a .jpg.

How weird that only some can see it. But has anyone else noticed that their card image becomes more colour saturated when uploaded to the forum?

Great cards so far... :ro

1776...? :?

Edited to add that having been enlightened as to the sig. of the above, I don't think there are grudges on this side of the Pond. History taught at school always seemed on the side of fairness and justice.

I tried and clearly there is a grudge there somewhere. (In fact I wonder if it is a browser setting - I re-uploaded a few cards in the other deck, when they were too big for some browsers to allow....)

It is worth lookin' at, too.  really neat cards coming in.

ok, i talked to the printer, and if we print it one one sheet, and they don't cut it, the cost isn't bad at all.  the problem is that it's larger than a standard shipping envelope and it'd need to be shipped in a tube and that would make shipping really expensive.  another option is to side it down to fit in a flat envelope, but the individual cards would be small (1.5 x 2.7 inches).  another option is to have them printed as individual cards and the printer cut them, but then they get more expenisive.  I kinda like the small idea because I'd like one cut and one uncut.  what do ya'll think?

Thanks, Sherry!  I can see them now on the master sheet.

Re: Size, I would go along with what other people want on this.  I liked the idea of a set of cards big enough to see (for instance the wording on the Sun; would that get lost in such a small size?).  But I also like the uncut sheet idea.

Love this project!

Yes, it's best to convert to RGB when uploading to the web (specifically sRGB).

Depending on what version of Photoshop you're using, under the View menu you'll find Proof Setup and Proof Colors items that will allow you to see what a file is going to look like when viewed under different scenarios.

Hello

Duh. I need Photoshop assistance please. How do I layer Skad's lines over the image I created for The World. In other words i need the lines to show and the white background to be transparent.

Thanx

It's a little weird and doesn't behave the way you'd expect. I did mine ages ago, but if I remember rightly, the lines are not on the layer you'd expect them to be on, but on the other layer, which does have a transparent background. I had to play around a bit - I'd be more helpful if I could remember exactly what I did...

I think Gregory knows a lot about how to do that kind of stuff. For her collages, I think she usually uses the transparant overlays. Mind you, I don't know if she uses Photoshop Assistent. I have Photoshop elements myself (used to have an old Photoshop) and I am still trying to work it out how it works, so I am afraid I can't be of much help at the moment.

I've had a look at my final psd  file, and it appears that the lines are on the layer named 'fool'. If you arrange the layers so that the the fool layer is above the grid, you can paste your image/working layer between the two (over the grid) and it should work.

I do indeed use Photoshop, and I do indeed know how to do that, if someone wants to know.

I did a card, though was going to edit it, but I was just away and took the PERFECT photo, so - it's pending again - I'll have it up in a day or two. Disregard the one skad posted !!!!!

I love the image and the way you made it fit - feel sure Sherry can overlay the lines more precisely !

And congrats on knocking over this forum - it dropped dead right after you posted your card !!!

I will try and do my (minor) tweak on mine after Sunday when I put Him on a plane !

Just one of the services I provide !

FWIW - I still need to figure out how to use my photoshop to get the sky right - I can't make it blend. I had to crop a small bit and paste it to fill in the top and it is making me nuts since all I notice is the 'mistake'. Someday I will actually read the photoshop help and have a clue LOL -

I will be working on this over the weekend ...

Now we need to see if Sherry needs a higher res version ?

PS what you need to use to do that is the "healing brush" - looks like a bandaid !!! It toggles from the patch one - which looks like - well, a patch !!!!

Sumada graciously pasted my Empress Card two messages below because I could not remember how to copy an image into my own post - thank you!! :ok I've deleted the PDF attachment I included earlier.

The lines on my particular template reminded me of a pregnant woman's profile, so I searched for an image that would fit exactly right into that lower left area. The flowing water was created & twisted with a bunch of filters & effects in Photoshop & the background is a muted image of an ultrasound, recolored for a more watery effect than in a typical ultrasound image.

I received written permission from Rachel, the photographer who took the photo of the pregnant woman (website: pregnancyportraits.net). I cropped and blurred the image considerably in Photoshop, but I still felt compelled to ask permission to use it.

I wanted to post here my Judgement card; I'm getting the message that my file is too big; it is a jpg file, I already reduced the resolution to 72 and the size to 0.1 inch. I can hardly see it. What am I supposed to do? Thank you for your help.

Yikes, my bad.  I hadn't realized I hadn't checked the forum for awhile.  I am getting some notifications. but not to all threads.  weird.  everyone should have my email addy by now, just email me if you want to get hold of me.

I've updated the list in the front.  cards are so cool
WE'RE HALF DONE, 11 CARDS IN, 11 CARDS TO GO.  2 WEEKS TO GO.

last chance for the chariot

REMEMBER TO SEND ME THE HIGH RESOLUTION VERSION.  and if you could, add the title of the card on the card.

and, actually, if you want to send a version without the lines, that would be cool too.  i'd make it easier for me to match the lines up card to card.

i'm trying to add a low res version of judgment.  hope it works, it's a neat card

well, I don't WANT turtles, per sey, but if YOU want a turtle or two, I have no actual objection to a turtle.  It can even be a blond turtle.

Just as long as he has a title.

Ehm, just a quick question. The lines don't have to be a part of the actual design, do they? I have this great idea, but not sure if I could make the lines fit with it. And yeah, I now the deadline is coming... I guess I am one of those eternal procrastinators when it comes to making my cards. Hopefully in this coming week I finally get going :f:cc:z

tru, the lines are supposed to be on your card, if that's what you mean.  If you see the layout in the first posting, when we put all the cards together, the lines create the TCF Fool.  That's part of the 2011.5 idea.  Is that what you were asking?

No - I think she means do we have to create an image where the lines are - like, say - the edge of a house or something.

No ! (well, I didn't except for two of them !)

OK, so if you look at the Chariot I just submitted, the lines are just on top of the image. I kind of like the placement but they weren't necessarily a shaded belt-buckle, etc.

Hope that helps!

that's it!

there wil be two parts to this deck, the individual cards, then the picture when they are all put together.  I got the idea from the Minotaur deck.

Yeah, that is what I meant. Because I saw several imaged where the lines were really a part as well. So I just wanted to check to be sure.

Ok, overlay is ok, I can do that :hp

OMG, I am just such a...:f:f:f

I finally started work on my card today. Made a drawing, am reasonably happy with it.. and then I find out that I have been using a different paper size then the template...:ee:v:cc

I assumed we were using the same size as the other TCF decks... I guess we are not? This template looks longer and smaller...:n

Oh, and does anyone know how to make the template transparant.. the white I mean in photoshop. Because I am trying and not making it work yet...:ww

And another thing, does the card need to have the title on the card? Maybe that will actually save me...:sd

Or scale it. Read your email - you can probably fit it in there and add some !

Yes it has to have the title :D (my revised one has it now.... I should maybe post it... Skad has the hi res one...) I wasn't happy that the light started so far from the lantern.

Actually now I want to change something else.... :cl

Hmm.. scale it... not sure if that will work or if the proportions will be all weird. I am already not sure if I want to use the actualy version I made (and scanned) or the colour corrected version (which is darker, but has more contrast).

I made a pastel drawing.. not so easy to just change that. But I will make it work... somehow...:ww:Z

the size of the cards was actually not arbitrary, but defined by the size and shape of the fool picture.

Ok, deadline approaching fast...:gi

And I managed to tweak and crop my original drawing so it would fit the format. And surprisingly, I am actually happy with the result.

(Btw, Skad, let me know if you prefer the hi-res with or without the lines):

So here is a bit of a different take on Temperance (idea thanks to my boyfriend):

Thanks. I will tell him. I told him I wanted to make Temperance and something with fire and water. And this what was he came up with... why don't you make a smithy, you have fire, you have water, you need to "temper" the metal.. well... here is the result.

Btw, the 4 of swords in the TCF II deck (sleeping cat with sun rising), was also his idea. I definately gonna pick his brain more often :cl

I'm working on getting all the high res together.  Learning paintshop as I go...

I love that Star. It works really well with the lines too. I thought I better not use black&white, because of the lines, but so far I have seen several wonderful black&white cards that just work great with the lines. Great work!:ok

FINAL VERSION IN FIRST PST ON PAGE 1 (and second post, I had to cut it in half to fit in within forum size limits).  It's a low res version so final will look quite a bit better.  only one missing is Morwenna's, send healing thoughts to her computer.

I added titles to acouple. if you don't like them, send me an updated version and I'll swap them out.

And, yes, I know that Death has a few problems.  somehow the scaling of the lines got strange. :?  I've emailed blistersnbutterflies about it.

So, what to ya'll think?

After I posted this, I received the files from Morwenna.  It's somewhat appropriate that Death is the only remaining card, isn't it?

If you upload it to any photo hosting site (Flickr, Photobucket, etc.) and then use the [IMG] tag to insert it into a post, you can get the whole thing in one post.

Looks great, BTW.

WOW!! This is so cool to see altogether! I'm so impressed with the the work here!

So, Powers That Be, will we have the option as a deck too or will this be a poster-only?

the problem with poster would be the shipping, i need to find out how much a tube costs to ship, an option is full size cards cut, and a 9x11 poster....e

I just looked at the cards at the start and it does really look wonderful.

Except... I noticed how my card looks. Temperance looks really weird. It has lost all the structure of the pastel and well, the drawing really isn't what it was. You can't even see or recognize the furnace anymore. And the subtle flickering of the light against the background has become orange blotches, there are other light blue blotches near the sea area... well, the whole thing just seems very blotchy, with some colours showing very much and others not at all anymore. It has lost all it's original structure.

So I really hope this is not the final version of the card for printing. :sd

As for the final format, I think I would prefer cards that I can put together if I wanted to.

Yes, it is definetly better.  most of the high res cards I rec'd were too high to even post by themselves (if anyone wanted to) so you can imagine what the group size was.

New top portion image with all cards accounted for. The dark lines weren't visible on the magician, so I made them a pale grey.  I also switched the title card to a linework view so there would be a better idea of what all the cards together should be.

There is a new bottom half also.  now you can see how neat the death card is. truelight's card looks better too.  it's still a very low res version of it, tho.

I am glad to hear that. I was first looking and thinking... wow. And then I saw that my card looked so weird. So I started worrying. But yes, if it is just because of the low resolution, then it would make sense. Pastel does seem to need a lot of detail and with the low resolution that is probably lost. Thanks for putting my mind at easy on this, Skad1.

And the new result looks great. You managed to fix the Death card too.. cool! I like the change to the title card, makes it easier to see the figure.

And yeah, you said most of the high res cards have too high a resolution to even post. That is true. I had to make a lower resolution Jpg to post on here. The original tif was huge. I actually also had to cut that down to send it to you.

Bravissimo!! I love what we have created together!! :ok

I am wondering if we are going to have a lwb or pamphlet of sorts so that the individual artists can talk about their inspirations for the card. I know that mine looks like just a picture of some old guy without the background regarding how I chose to approach the card and the significance of the imagery (I did send a brief description when I submitted the image).

Thanks!

I still have another question for the printer, but I should know that by tomorrow.  DON'T SEND MONEY UNTIL I KNOW IF THERE ANY CHANGES.

Right now it looks like the deck will be 7.50 USD each with shipping
USA shipping $5.15 (~$13.00 USD)
to Canada  $12.95 (~$21.00 USD)
to everywhere else  $16.95 (~$25.00 USD)

There are 7 people in Europe (2-england, france, belgium, 2-germany, netherlands).  Would it be cheaper to send the cards to one person, and that person shipping in Europe?  If so, does anyone volunteer?

I can mail it in a flat envelope.  the cards will come in 4 pieces and will need to be cut.

If you have problems with the cutting, I can do it, but I make no promises as to straightness or accuracy.

It's unlikely to be cheaper to send to one person so they can repost - a first class letter stamp has just gone up to 60p here...

Not till April 30 - and if you buy a load NOW...

I am doing !

$16.95 per deck is extreme. If it were passed on as a first class small packet + a share of that, it would certainly save. I would say I'd do it - but I shall be leaving the UK soon for 3 months.

Or people could pay for their decks and wait until the 2012 deck is ready so both can be sent together.

WELL - if these are flat, they wouldn't sit well in a package with a small box or whatever...

Sherry - how soon would they be available to mail ?

True. Surely a cardboard envelope wouldn't cost  $16.95 to send though? I feel bad not offering, but I'm a bit overburdened at the moment.

Not everyone is participating in the 2012 deck, though. I can send $ anytime...

I would ask truelighth, if I can't do it myself. It would TOTALLY depend on whether the decks can be with me by the beginning of May, and/or if NOT, whether Europeans can BEAR to wait till mid-July....

I can wait for the postage money till July, as I trust you all, and anyway if you let me down I will BITE you.

Gregory,
I think the $12.95 to Canada is for shipping in a standard box in my experience; the box would fit 2 MA (major arcana) decks quite confortably - why don't you have yours sent to me as well (no charge for you for shipping as I have to pay that amount anyway) and you could pick it up from me at Yorkdale :-)

just an idea

Finally have final quotes in hand, and have given the go ahead to print.  The postage is going to cost more than the deck!  :fI will PM everyone with my Paypal ID.

Sorry it has taken so long.

I had a good question via email, and I thought I'd copy the answer to ya'll

Fees at Paypal are simple, either you pay them or they take them out of the money you send, so basically I pay them.  I am not making any money on doing this so I prefer that you pay the fees.  Which option is up to you, I think 'personal' is the only one that gives the option for you to pay fees.

I am planning on shipping the cards in a 9x12 flat Priority envelope.  The cards will be coming in four sheets of six cards each that you will need to cut.  If you are really stressed over the idea of cutting the cards, I can cut them for you.  BUT I make no promises that it will be a better cutting job that you could do yourself, and then you'd be stuck with whatever I cut up.

New paid list, 2 holds.  I forgot to figure the cost of a deck for adam into the overall, so I am planning on holding on to it and sending it with the 2012.

REMEMBER TO PAY FEES ON PAYPAL.   Select gift or personal, or whatever.  Instead of the 15.15 for deck and shipping I only get 14.41 so the rest comes out of my unemployed pocket.  acouple people have sent extra so I will break even (so far) but it's not fair to them.  If you're paying with anything other than a paypal balance there will be fees.

See later post for list

Skad, I'm sending you $10 just for the deck - perhaps you'll keep one for me and I'll pay the postage when I have another to be sent.

:ce:ce:ce

First shipment went out today.
Rylla and Gregory's fit well in one envelope.

Three surprises for you.  It was going to be only one, then I thought of one thing that just had to be done....  Then when the printers machines were down I sewed up the second surprise.  Then the printer made a boo-boo, and they ended up giving us the mis-printed sheet.

The cards in this picture are cut, but your are not, they are in sheets, so don't be surprised when you get them.

The colors turned out really nice and intense and just nice!  By the time I got the scan sized down small enough to fit on the forum, I lost alot of the brilliance, so they will look alot nicer in person.  Alot!

And yes, there is a typo.  And no, there will not be a reprint.  it is part it's charm and individuality.  I tried to correct it on everyones prints, If  I didn't. please do,

One other thing, I didn't plan in a copy to the Meseu in Italy, anyone want to sponsor them? Unfortunately, it'd be 26.95, unless we just hold the copy to ship with the 2012 deck.

What should I do about fees?  So far 3 people have left the fees to me, for a total of 3.25.  Last year I tried the letting people know and having themsend more, but the only one who benifited was paypal.  I guess the only other option is to refuse the payment.  For the last 2 I have tried shipping a cheaper method, but I don't know how long they'll take.  Plus it's almost impossible to plan ahead how much the shipping will cost if I don't use Priority Mail.  (Gail, it wasn't you, yous came thru fine.)

Also, if anyone wants a second deck, let me know.  I can try shipping them in a plain envelope and let you know how much the shipping was.

I received mine the other day. It is lovely! And I like the surprises. Thanks Sherry, for all your hard work.

It is a real pity that some people have left the fees to you. I don't think that is right. I agree with Gregory for a next time. Just add some extra already, so you are sure you get paid properly. It is not like you make any money out of this, so if there is some extra, you deserve it.

Yup, there are plenty for everyone left, and some extras if you want 2.  I sent you an email awhile back with the info, I'll go ahead and send a PM today with the info again.

I send acouple packages with cheaper shipping so even out the fees thing, so I am ok.  I don't really like to so it because there is no way to know in advance what the charges are, but they are substantially cheaper.  It would make the biggest difference for the overseas shipping.

All the extras are gone, so now all I have left is enough for the people who participated.  If they let me know they don't want theirs I can let someone else have it.

So it looks like this deck is finally wrapping up.  I never heard from Ambrial and sacredashes, usually they are pretty good,,  But I came to .17 cents of breaking even.  Acouple people sent alittle extra and acouple got different shipping.  I need to review why my estimate if what the deck would cost per person was off,  I guess i don't plan for snafu's.  Having and selling the extra decks is what made the difference.  So it ends well. :ok  :ok

Has anyone read with the various sizes?  I am curious if there was any difference.   :hp
