Today I was quite delighted to receive (as a very generous gift) a copy of the Vivien Kabar Tarot (Kabar Tarot Kártya & Könyv), a recently published tarot and book set from Hungary. It is a majors deck based on a series of large-scale tarot paintings by the writer and artist, Vivien Kabar. The imagery is non-traditional and quite imaginative (and often quite powerful). Interestingly, the paintings are not constrained to a particular aspect ratio, varying from tall and narrow to wide. As the scans below show, the fairly large cards are somewhat wider than usual to accommodate those paintings in landscape format. Some cards: Another and the card back: The set is available from Alexandra Online here (although if you can figure out how to order from them, you're more resourceful than I). |

The artwork is fantastic but why is the Wheel so creepy? Does the artist explain why she used certain images with each card? N. |

The only Hungarian web translator I found is none too good, but it sort of indicates that inquiries about international orders could be sent to: kulfold@alexandra.hu The artwork is fantastic but why is the Wheel so creepy? There is a booklet with a couple of pages about each card, but it's in Hungarian, so not much (i.e., any) help to me. However, it's apparently being translated into English, so we may eventually know more. |

I must try and get a copy of this. It certainly has some powerful images. The artist appears to have some considerable obsession with bleeding eyes and the crucifixion. |

This IS extraordinary and collectible by any standards. I am still in no cash situation and will be for far longer than I care to even think about.... but I add this to my list. ... In hope! One never knows when circumstances might change. Maybe the government might suddenly realise that we disability pensioners NEED desperately to have our lives cushioned by cash for ease. And of course, all manner of four-legged creatures might fly as well. Must watch the hippogrif Harry Potter and dream. mythos |

I've got a reply to my mail today - I'm pasting it here: " I was very pleased to hear about your kind interest on my Tarot Card and I can any time mail a copy to you to the address you sent to me in your e-mail. I will soon send a bank account number so you will be able to pay for the card by bank transfer. The price of it is 20 Euros. The German copy is also available upon interest and the English version is just being under translation. Looking forward to hear from you soon, best regards, Vivien Kabar" |

I received a copy of this deck a few days ago. At least four of the images are based on Vivien Kabar's paintings created as a tribute to the great late 20th century British painter Francis Bacon. I will write to her and see if the whole deck is, in this sense, a tribute to Bacon. Her website, very generously, has a page where you can access images of the paintings used for the tarot deck. http://www.vivienkabar.hu/index.php?page=3&lang=en&details=18 |

AdamMcLean wroteI will write to her and see if the whole deck is, in this sense, a tribute to Bacon I have received an email from Vivien Kabar explaining her tarot deck a bit further. They were not meant, after all, to be a tribute to the painter Francis Bacon, since she had never heard of him when she was working on the images. The resemblance was purely coincidental, and after her exhibition she was told that they reminded people of Bacon’s vision, and for this apparent similarity she received an award. The gallery wants to label her with this style, but rather she wants people to recognise her own style and vision. Last edited on Thu Nov 13th, 2008 10:29 pm by AdamMcLean |

IBAN is wonderful - as long as you are in the Eurozone. And I bet if the UK ever is (which I wish for most fervently) they will still find a way to charge that much. WICKED. I can RECEIVE money by IBAN free of charge. I send "carefully concealed cash" myself ! |

Vivien Kabar has informed me that she has now set up a Paypal account to make it easier for people to buy her tarot deck. You can contact her on kabarvivien@yahoo.com which is also her Paypal address. Her deck is well worth buying, both because of the power of her imagery and for the fact that this is a rare production issuing from Hungary. I am sure most serious collectors will not want to miss this one. |

And here a sample from the translation!
The Judge This card is often called “The Last Judgement”, but I think in this case it is best if we do not us the word “last”, since we are inside the empire of eternity, where our actions are constantly judged, which comes in the form of their consequences, since what else could be judgement than the results of our actions. This card means that we have to account for the past we have left behind, because we need to see clearly in order to achieve fulfilment. We have to learn to accept and hold our pains, sufferings and fears in our arms in order to understand that they are also parts of us in the whole. We can only move further if we become accepting, once we have obtained understanding. We must accept our pasts, since they make the path towards the future. Everybody will reach their goals at some time, but everybody takes a different route, this is what makes us unique and interesting. We must become friends with our personal history in order to be able to release it and through this release we can arrive at a way of stepping further, towards the fulfilment of our destiny that gives meaning to all our previous tests, trials and efforts. The Judge judges impersonally, she does not have any partiality in her, therefore her responsibility is none other than the quality of the Path. The impersonality overcomes the incomplete perspectives of the spirit that is locked in the body; therefore The Judge never makes a mistake! Now we can get the honorarium for what we have done up until now, everybody according to their efforts… …because everything we have ever done will once look back on us… |
