I'm looking for more info on the H P Lovecraft decks... there are two, neither of which I have been able to find for less than $350. Any leads appreciated.

Do you mean the first and second editions of the H P Lovecraft Tarot ?

The first edition is certainly difficult to find and expensive, but you should be able to pick up the second (sepia) edition at an affordable price.

By the way, do you know there is a Cthulhu Tarot? It is unpublished black and white pen drawings by Philip Reed. It was issued as illustrations in a book. Apparently he also made coloured versions.

My apologies, I just discovered that I actually have the coloured versions of the Tarot of Cthulhu images.

I would like to find one of the first editions, but I haven't seen one at any price in my searching. I have seen the second edition at $350-$1000 which is, I think, overpriced. If you have any leads, please let me know.

I do know about the Cthulu deck and have two copies of the Necronomicon tarot as well. If available, I would be interested in the Cthulu tarot too.

That auction is by a notorious seller who inflates the prices.

It is probably a costly mistake to buy at that price.

Definitely interesteted in that one (I like the "dark" decks in general) but I have to agree with Adam, the price is inflated.

So I keep looking.

Hello Jade, as the designer and illustrator of the H.P. Lovecraft Tarot deck, I wanted to let you know that there should still be copies of the second edition available at a reasonable price, from your latest post, it looks like you found one. Congratulations, as a collector myself, the one thing I hate are over-inflated prices. I sold the last decks that I had on E-Bay for $29.95 plus shipping, plus I signed the decks. I would be curious to know what you think of my work, the second sepia colored edition of 1000 copies is by far the best as far as quality, and the fact that Eric Freidman has done such an excellent job of making this an actual working deck. The first edition was an edition of 500 but suffered from an inferior, but dark and creepy looking print job. I had taken the artwork to two different local printers but were actually turned away by these modern day puritans as they self-righteously told me that they wouldn't feel right about printing the cards, and that they were evil in some way. As a result, they were printed in another state without myself there for a press check. We have plans for a third expanded edition which will be packaged in a decorated metal tin, no more paper boxes. If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact me.

Hi Daryl,

I have the 2nd edition of the Lovecraft and I bought it for your artwork. The fact that you are self-taught has been encouraging for me in life.

You are doing comic work, right? Any plans to do another deck of some sort, not necessarily tarot?

Thank you so much for the advance notice of your future plans for a third edition.

Do you have an established timetable?

True, very true.  However offers are accepted.  Much, much lower offers.  Nothing crazy, but more acceptable.

I have found with acouple of the auctions that have an extraordinary price is kinda like a sucker call, if they'll pay it the auctioneer will take it!  But they will accept more reasonable offers.

Hi Daryl

I look forward to purchasing your 3rd printing in the future.  If you plan to print in sepia, I envision an antiqued copper tone metal box.... would be complimentary to the sepia ink...iif you print in gray tones, an oxidized black/gray metal would look great... don't think collectors mind paying a bit more for these details...please excuse me for these aesthetic opinions....i used to work as an industrial designer...and the product development process gets stimulated in my brain when i imagine what is to be.

Thank you for the kind words, I've been inspired over the years by many artists and writers and it's great to hear that I can inspire others in turn. I've always had an interest in dark fantasy and horror and would like to design a tarot deck based on the fantasy of Clark Ashton Smith, a contemporary of Lovecraft's, and also an influence on Lovecraft himself and many modern horror writers. I would also like to do something based on the writings of William Hope Hodgson, who wrote the amazing novel "House on the Borderland," which is set millions of years in the future when the sun has burned out and all mankind has gathered in a mile high metal pyramid which is beset from without from all manner of bizarre creatures. The Hodgson project has great promise, especially as all of his writings are in the public domain, it may end up as an illustrated book. As far as comics, I haven't done much since the eighties when I teamed up with my brother Joe and formed "Anthrax Press," which was an outlet for weird underground humor. We have a publisher who is now compiling all the old comics into one large graphic album. Comic work took me too long to do as I have a very detailed stippling style, I'm doing more with the computer and photos today so I'll see what happens. I'll be glad to sign the booklet or a card from the deck for you, let me know and I'll give you my address.  Daryl

We are still in the early planning stages for designing a third edition, Eric Friedman will probably want to re-order some of the cards and there are many that I want to redesign. There's an excellent chance that it may become a full-color deck, I deliberately created the sepia tints to make the deck look like it may have been printed hundreds of years ago, but I think the addition of color may add something special, especially for Lovecrafts most famous story "The Colour Out of Space."

Here's a bit of trivia for you, I see that you're located in Canada, that's where the second edition of the Lovecraft Tarot was printed, by Quebecor of Canada, their quality was excellent.

Hi Susi, This forum is really the first time I've been able to find out what people thought about my work and it's great to be able to interact and to bounce ideas off each other. My artwork has really been done in a vacuum, I send my work off and if it sells then I guess I've done something right, I've always tried to creat something that I as a collector would want to possess. As far as the decorative tin, the corroded copper look was exactly what I have in mind, and the blackened oxidized iron would also look good. I got the idea of using a protective tin while working for a children's publishing company, illustrating educational products for kids, it helps me keep some balance and not wander too far into the outer darkness in search of inspiration. It looks like I can post jpgs of my art, so as things progress I'll keep you updated.

Hey Daryl,

Thank you so much for letting us know what's meeping and shambling our way! I'm a Lovecraft fanatic from way back and am always excited to find new ways to interface with his ideas. Especially with the disappointing Necronomicon Tarot foisted on the market by Llewellyn, it's exciting to hear that y'all are interested in revisting and reworking this stunning deck even further... The artwork in this deck is so hypnotic and rich (my Old One printing from you is framed and universally admired by visitors), and I love the idea that you'll be riffing on your own artwork again.

In this 3rd iteration of the deck, I'd love to see y'all move in an even more readble" direction. Not a "Golden Dawn clone" necessarily, but with specified minors and courts that would allow a more practical use of the deck for divination etc.

Please do keep us abreast of future developments.

Scion

Aha, I used to work as a temp for a division of Quebecor in Richmond Hill, and a good friend of mine worked in one of their printing plants near Toronto. They used to publish those hefty computer manuals in the old days. No wonder the printing on the 2nd edition is excellent.

Daryl, I can't believe what you are saying about not interacting with people who own your deck before and not getting feedback on your work. You came to the right place, for sure. I'm kind of a middling collector, and can't go after the costly ones, but many people here--Papageno for one as well as I--are devoted to your artwork. When discovering you, we all say things like "Where did this guy come from? I have to have this deck."

Clark Ashton Smith--oh wow, did you know he wrote gobs of poetry too? There's a place online that has it all archived. Typical of its time, it has rhyming meter and is sort of overwrought in a Gothic way, but I was just struck by the fact that this fellow who is thought to be somewhat cheesy in certain circles had quite an impetus for writing and was so creative. If you do a deck on his work I'm sure many people will enjoy it.

I used to be on a Sci-Fi / Fantasy reading list for many years and the fellow who moderated them was a big fan of Smith, Lovecraft, and the lyrical Lord Dunsany. Those authors still have a big following in literature and horror circles.

Your deck in fact, got me to truly explore H.P. Lovecraft. I grew up reading him in anthologies and always thought him a little creepy. After I ordered the deck I discovered all the fan stuff about the Cthulhu Mythos and that writers have been building stories on Lovecraft's work for decades.

So I bought the following books in the trade paperback editions by DelRay:

The Best of H.P. Lovecraft

The Transition of H.P. Lovecraft (Includes the Mountains of Madness)

Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos

The Children of Cthulhu

I also found one tale in Neil Gaiman's Smoke and Mirrors anthology called Shoggoth's Old Peculiar which was great fun. So because of your deck I have been introduced to this delightful man. He isn't creepy at all, and some of the stories he's inspired are wonderful as well. Amazing what happens when you drop your bias and just explore with an open mind.

House on the Borderland sounds very familiar to me, I might have read it years ago in an anthology. It's available at Project Gutenberg, (there's the public domain you were mentioning) so I'll reread it and here's the link if anyone else is interested.

http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/10002

That would make a great story for deck development.

You seem to be REALLY interested in character for your art. I like that. Obviously you have a gift for it since I'm sure many people have used your art as impetus to read and explore. "Exploring" with art and decks is a big thing with me, secondary to reading with decks. I've rocketed off on poetry, art, history and drawing and painting again because of decks.

I'm excited for your new projects--it's good to get rolling on the things that truly matter to you creatively.

I would love it if you could sign the title card for me from the deck Daryl. Could you send me a private message with your address please? I can mail it and send an envelope and postage for you to mail it back. Thank you for the offer, I am delighted.

Ah shucks, Scion said it much better:

" I love the idea that you'll be riffing on your own artwork again."

What he said. . . . <g>

Hi Scion, It's always a pleasure to hear from a Lovecraft fanatic, there is a deep well of Lovecraftian lore to be plumbed, I will be looking for advice and ideas from all those on this forum who are interested. The Lovecraft Tarot was originally going to be a simple art deck, but Eric Friedman felt that he could make it into a true working deck. If we had started from the beginning to develop a working tarot deck, then I'm sure things would have been much easier, it amazes me how Eric was able to do what he did, I am just the artist, but Eric has formidable occultic knowledge, and the ability to put it into words.

I guess that working in a sort of isolation has kept me from being too influenced by my contemporaries, I didn't want to subconsiously mimic their styles, or feel pressured to pander to what the public may buy. My horror and fantasy work is more of a labor of love, I've tried to capture the pure essence of what Lovecraft was writing about. Although I haven't visited Providence, RI, and I'm sure that I would be disappointed at how modern it would look today, I did visit Salem, and walked through the house of the evil Judge Curwen, the "Witch House" as it's called today, as I'm sure Lovecraft did. I also spend much time in the Old Burying Ground, and spent some time in the House of Seven Gables, which was said to have influenced Lovecraft's story about the witch house with a hidden chamber in one of the gable ends (Dreams in the Witch House). I'm glad that you've read Dunsany and Clark Ashton Smith, both, along with Lovecraft, were of course heavily influenced by the master, Edgar Allan Poe. Lovecraft also wrote "Supernatural Horror in Literature" which is a great source for the best horror novels written in the past few hundred years. There are plenty of sources for Lovecraft books, I've enjoyed collecting the Arkham House hardbacks, and although the older ones are scarce and expensive, Arkham House keeps reprinting new editions. They've printed several books containing letters to and from Lovecraft, which help you understand the caring and giving man that he was, especially to aspiring artists and writers. If I've been able to inspire others to explore Lovecraft, CAS, Dunsany, and others, then I feel as if I've accomplished something worthwhile.  Daryl

While browsing, I came across this game called Arkham Horror. I guess it's an RPG or a variation they call a "cooperative board game."

http://www.spiritgames.co.uk/gamesin.php?UniqueNo=2415

Only for those who have someone to play with, although they do say you can play with one. Hey, you could set your Lovecraft deck characters up as players.

You can get 4 expansion sets for it like The King in Yellow or The Dunwich Horror.

It's beyond me how to play this stuff but it looks interesting and gets good reviews.

The caption for this picture was: "Ultimate cosmic evil descends upon Arkham."

Mwuahahahaha.

Can't see the cards at all well ... but I'll definately take the cat:D.

I've seen the Lovecraft deck, of course, and fallen in love with the artwork, of course.  Extraordinary.  I had the chance to buy it inexpensively but (oh the regrets!!!), decided against it, because I have never read Lovecraft's work.  Obviously it is time to read Lovecraft.

You can see several posted photos of cards from the link at the bottom of the website I posted. They look okay but definitely not up to Daryl's skill and originality.

I had the chance to buy it inexpensively but (oh the regrets!!!), decided against it, because I have never read Lovecraft's work.

When I bought the deck I couldn't remember any of the stories so I bought 2 anthologies and read them. As I finished each story, I'd pull out the card and relate it to what I'd just read--worked well. Still have a few of the stories to go though.

Too bad you didn't take the chance and buy it Mythos.

Hello, My name is Hans Kittel and I enjoy the writings of H.P. Lovecraft. I also enjoy the renditions of the cards you have made. When I first discovered your rendition of the popular Lovecraft stories into a tarot, I had just met my wife. I had no interest in Tarot at all. Her previous fiance had burned her deck. I decided to make her a new one... It was actually my deck I was making from scratch little did i know.
Long story short so as to not waste your time, I have used the images and numbering system not in the same as yours but of your lovecraft tarot as a template. I had never made tarot cards from scratch before. The point is I am very interested in the 1st edition cards; Byakhee and The Servitors of the Outer Gods.
My question is, Would perhaps you have a picture of these two cards artwork you would be willing to send to me electronically? My deck is 78 cards already and since it is numbered and pieced differently out of your conception as a base, I wanted to add these two to make the deck a full 80 cards please???
Once again I would like to thank you in advance for the wonderful art and design illustrated in your deck and giving me the opportunity to in my own way be a creative force in the humanly universal experience which is tarot. And once again those two pieces of the puzzle would be greatly appreciated (Byakhee and The Servitor of the Outer Gods

Hi Daryl,

You graciously signed one of my cards for me when I purchased the new edition and mailed it to you. :D

I have a question about the first (blue/grey) edition, which I also have.  It's in a two piece box, but is not signed or numbered. I believe (although memory may well be faulty!) that I saw one of the original edition decks on Ebay which was signed and numbered. Were there different releases of the first edition? Thanks!
