Hi All, I've just received a set of Jean Chaboseau's Le Tarot Traditionnel, apparently from 1948. The cards are in pretty good condition, except for the fact that the original owner appears to have been pretty dim ... they've written all over the cards and I can't believe the number of times they've had to correct the card number they've added to a card. Seriously, how difficult is it to memorise the sequence(s) of the major arcana? I really need to spend time analysing the deck. The pentacles are fascinating as they include far more sophisticated alchemical symbols than most alchemy-related decks - The 4 of Pentacles/Quatre Deniers, for example, includes the symbols for Aqua Fortis (nitric acid) and Aqua Regia (nitric acid and hydrochloric acid)! Anyway, one thing I notice is that the card back I have is different from the only copy I can see online, on Aeclectic: https://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t=272115 I have no idea how many print runs there were, but would be interested to hear anyone's thoughts. If you are able to read French, and would like to investigate the deck further, then tracking down a copy of Chaboseau's book would be a good idea. It is rather rare though, and the paper stock was not great quality either. |

I've read the extract available on the BnF Gallica website: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k33458014.texteImage I've not had any luck, however, in getting hold of the original publication or even a pdf copy of the full essay. I tried buying a pdf on various French websites, but was refused as soon as it became clear I didn't live in France. For some reason they cannot sell digital scans outside France. I'll just have to keep checking Abebooks, ZVAB, and all the usual suspects. |

Chaboseau's book is interesting for a number of reasons, although I suspect it would primarily be interesting to you on account of the images (reproduced on better stock paper at the end of the book, by the way). The main thrust is a hermetic interpretation of the Tarot, but it also contains an interesting aside on a Buddhist interpretation too, based on the twelve nidanas, if memory serves. Incidentally, Chaboseau Senior was one of the original cohort of French occultists who became interested in Buddhism in the early 20th century, and wrote a book on the subject (available on Gallica or the Internet Archive, I think). His son's book is dedicated to his memory. |

I will note that a PDF copy of Chaboseau's book is available for purchase on the following Canadian website: https://www.leslibraires.ca/livres/le-tarot-jean-chaboseau-9782402260503.html I will also note that this is likely due to the fact that copyright period is shorter in Canada than in France. Dear Ronan, thanks for your continuing support with helping me find a copy of Chaboseau's book. I tried the Canadian site, but I didn't have any luck. It seemed to stick on making a decision, probably because I had to identify my location and the same copyright restrictions perhaps came into play. I'll continue to check on Abebooks or next time I'm in London will go read the copy that I've discovered they have at the Warburg Institute. |

Hi Ronan, Just a quick note to say that my 1946 copy of Chaboseau's Le Tarot: Essai d'interpretation selon les Principes de l'Hermétisme has just arrived!  I can't wait to have time to read it and hadn't realised that it contains copies of all the images from the deck. I'll post a few scans when I have time. |
