10 Swords was gone already. Sorry. But I hope you pick another
And Le pendu, do want another one while there are still majors to be had?
I changed the "Happy Squirrel" to "Happy Designer". That way whoever selects the card gets to pick what animal they want, if they want an animal.

If I understand correctly, Strength is now available? If so, then I'd like to do Strength and the 3 of Swords, please.
And it's all Quarkling's fault!

Keep looking at the first post in this thread, as i get updates, I'll post them there (there are two already.)
There have been questions about the Blue Line. And no, it's not a "theme", it's a "unifying element".
To help promote the creativeness of use of a 'blue line'. I am announcing a contest. The winner will be whoever has the best and most creative use of a blue line in their design. I will pay for the winners deck and shipping to them. (So guess who gets to decide who the winner is?) I will take recommendations, but I will be final judge.
I decided not to do the Wheel, so that is available.

I realize it may be too early to ask, but I see the Emperor is the last major without a home....as he was the last 2 years...
If nobody wants him, I'll take him as I have the past 2 years. I confess, I am ongoing "emperor" issues in my life, so I welcome continued exploration of this card...

Perhaps I'm "flat lining" here, but I still don't understand what this means. I do not want to HAVE to use a "blue line" in my card designs. If that's a hard and fast rule - then I'm out.

ETA - I do collage work and have no way of incorporating a "blue line", even if I were inclined to do so.

Le Pendu, I kinda feel bad asking you to give up the Empress. Especially since I see that all the other majors are gone... eep! Guess I should have made up my mind sooner
Go ahead with the Empress, I will grab some minors instead. I had an idea for the Empress, the same I had last year, but then I changed to Justice. But well, maybe for the next deck.
Hey, what about the poor Emperor, and the poor Wheel. They need love too.
Plus the Happy Designer card, that's kinda a major, kinda minor, kinda well, kinda

There has to be challenge in life somewhere. I think everyone who voted for the blue line thought that it would be the least intrusive to the designer. You could pick to collage a picture that has a blue line in it, or a picture of a blue line somewhere in your collage. I bet you could come up with something. Try at least one.Last edited on Tue Feb 16th, 2010 06:44 pm by skad1

No, she'll only take him if no one else wants him. But seriously, it's only the first week of signup, someone has to want the Emperor? Don't they? Show some love people. There is still alot of people who haven't signed up that did last year, so there is hope. Maybe truelight (or le pendu) will take the Emperor rather than the High Priestess....

I'll stay in then, but I'm going on record that I personally think that requiring everyone to incorporate a blue line is pretty darn near the dumbest thing I have ever heard!

Hello Kimber
I want to help out here!!!!!
Perhaps the BLUE LINE, might present itself as the blue veins that you pencil onto an arm, using a blue colored pencil. Or you could pencil them onto a traditional 3 of swords heart....
Will be a fun challenge for all of us to make the blue line as subtle and fresh as possible.
Glad you are in!!!

A little help here, please, for the woefully obtuse....why are there two different sizes? Will the cards have borders, or can we make our own? Are there requirements for a specific font, or type of numbering, or suit names?
Is there some secret place where all of the answers to these questions are carefully guarded to prevent access by the uninitiated?

Can you see a picture? Sometimes the pictures don't show. The next post has the pdf of it if you want to download it.
The first diagram is the actual card size and dimensions. The dashed area is the border which will be done by someone else, your design area is 2 1/2 by 3 3/4 inches. To make the final design look as good as possible, it is always recommended to work at a larger scale. Then when the final design is scaled down at the end, it minimizes any little imperfections. It just looks better. The second diagram is the the card sized up twice size, just to give you good working dimensions. You can work any scale you want, as long as the final ratio is 1:1.5. In other words, 1 inch in the horizontal equals 1 1/2 inch in the vertical.
Does that help?

Well, of COURSE. This is a SELECT project for SPECIAL people
There are two sizes which are the same size because one is metric and one is imperial cos some of us are in one place and some in another. Also there are two sizes one for the CARD size and one for the recommended minimum design size cos some people did them ever so small (like, final card size at 72dpi or something) and they didn't GROW too well at first. Ly and OnePotato needed them at 300 - and you can't really up them. You know what you're doing, as we can see from Taschen etc, so as long as you send in the scanned version at 300 dpi it will be fine.
Borders - someone does that for the whole deck, if the last two decks are anything to go by - that's how come they ended up like Real Decks ! They also standardised the fonts and that. I assume it is the same this time ?
Oh - cross posted, well never mind !

Yes, I can see the pics, thanks. But you lost me at "final ratio"! LOL I am so not a math person! I think I will just work in the larger size, as you recommend, and then scan it to the smaller size, as gregory recommends. I think I can handle that!
But apparently I can't make the blue border I was planning??

Work and scan at the larger size. Let the final reduction be done when we are actually putting your picture into the border.

It'd be better not to have a border and let the border be the part that created by someone else (the dashed area).
Ah, just do what you's want to do, and stick a blue line innit.

Hi ;-)
I would like to do the Emperor and the 5 of cups, if still free. If not, just give me some other cards. Each card is o.k. for me ;-)

Le Pendu will do the Empress. I just pm-ed him about it. I realized that at this time of my life, it doesn't feel right to do the Empress.
I do however want to grab the 9 of Swords and the Ace of Pentacles. I think it is also ok not to do a major this time .

Blue line: Must be BLUE and a LINE. (no blueish, or kinda blue squiggles.) Rest is up to you, I may end up regretting that, but you wanted blue line. Well, ok, I suggested blue line, but you didn't have to go for it!
Question about the blue line.
Does it have to be STRAIGHT? Because I never, ever got the idea that it had to be straight! Just a LINE, in BLUE. So if I want my line to be squiggly and not straight, I thought that was fine. As long as there was BLUE and it was a LINE and it appeared, straight, curved, circular, somehow, in my image.
I am nervous enough about this as it is. I am planning on creating all three of my cards by hand. I am NOT an artist. ! NOT. I do not have a scanner, nor a color printer, and I am crap at Photoshop. All I can do in Photoshop is resize photos, literally. All I have is a black-and-white laser printer. So I was planning on trying to paint my cards -- don't ask how because I don't know -- and other 3D methods -- so any restrictions as to "how" the blue line appears will be, well, restricting.
Also once my cards are done, somehow I have to go about getting them to someone. So that they can be scanned. Or some such thing.
But first I must come up with ideas, and I cannot draw people. I can draw really good stick figures, though!
I WILL figure something out. But as for googling images, printing copyright free images or whatnot and sticking them onto something, I cannot do that, since I have no scanner and no color printer. And forget me working with image software. I don't have anything sophisticated on my old Mac and Photoshop is plenty sophisticated; TOO sophisticated, really. I'm just gonnna go old-school even if it means I am using crayons.

I think it has to be a LINE, as opposed to - well, see attached. I think the line on the left would pass, and the teeny one on the right would not. skad ?

Hi Missy, Not to worry!
When your card images are ready, you should be able to take your art work to Econoprint or any local printer...give them skad's specifications. they can scan and email the file to you.Last edited on Wed Feb 17th, 2010 07:42 pm by acucent

Also once my cards are done, somehow I have to go about getting them to someone. So that they can be scanned. Or some such thing.
I WILL figure something out.
It needs to be a blue line, relative straightness is up to you. (in other words, no it doesn't have to be straight) Also, if you want you send your designs over to me and I can scan them for you. I did so last year for someone and I thought it worked out ok. ?
Gregory dear,
dear, dear gregory. You should NOT put ideas into these poor peoples heads. They will think you are serious.
I would hope that the blue line is part of the design, not a detraction from your design. By that criteria, the little blue line would have been better, because the big line looks like a really bad scratch on your picture.
If you're not sure what to do, do your design as you want it to be. Then try to figure out where a blue line would enhance, or just fit in. Or what could be changed to blue to create the blue line. In other words, don't sweat the blue line until you have to.

Everyone:
Please don't forget to explain your reasoning behind your use of the blue line, and how it contributes to your interpretation of your card image in your lwb entry.
Since this is the "unifying element" of the deck, I think it is important to stand behind the concept.
I think that finding a "loophole" is not a very good solution, and won't contribute very much to making this a good deck.
There is no need to be intimidated here.
It doesn't matter if you "cannot draw".
No honest effort should be seen as a failure.
And any honest effort will be far more appreciated than an excuse not to try.

OK, this is a first draft of my Devil but the blue line here is part of the real deal graph that lost so many people their retirements, jobs, hopes and dreams. It's just an example. Let me know what you guys think. The economy is that train wreck we can't look away from. So many people were "hooked" on the stock market and so suddenly said, If only I had hit the "sell" button.

Marcia, This is brillant. Don't change a thing!
Investing in the stock market looked like a good thing to do....but its just like devil's food cake. It looks great and yummy, and you pay for it later...puttin' on the pounds + makes your blood sugar drop...energy levels drop.
And not to mention, the addicting quality of the market. So you make a little $$$....its easy, like gambling....invest a little more and a little more.....and then CRASH.
Your design layout, color, everything about this card is clear and dynamic!!!!!!

That's a sweet thought and all, butI'm not buying it. My "reasoning" behind the use of the line is simply "because it's required". I understand that some people are into the "unifying element" thing, and that's fine, but IMPHO, it will detract from the deck as a whole, rather than enhance it. For me, the "unifying element" is the coming together of all of the people who are involved in creating it, and has nothing to do with having to stick something in whether it fits with your conception of the card or not.
I'm playing along, but I don't have to like it or agree with it!

The few have decided that a blue line will mar our artwork. How about a big blue "X" across the card? My interpretation would be, that This represents the lack of my artistic freedom to do the card my way. Should be a great COLLABORATION!!
Now all we have to do is delineate the exact shade of blue. I must get to work on your card now.
