Recently I find that every day junk postings are appearing on the board, where people are trying to sell non-tarot items, computer games and such.

These seem to be emanating from China.

I have to delete these and the users every day

If it continues much longer I will have to lock the board from new members.

Bad luck.

I hope people already here will still be able to direct new people we KNOW to you, to be admitted manually ?

Yes I will add a few people manually. Unfortunately many people find it impossible to register as they have too strong an internet protection set up for their computer. If a user blocks the setting up of cookies on their computer, then they won't be able to get passed the registration setup. I have two or three people emailing me each week wanting me to do something about this for them. There is nothing I can do as it is their computer setup which is stopping them getting passed the registration. The board uses a cookie on their computer to store the users logon details.

So they can temporarily allow cookies, register, and then switch back?

Not temporarily ! Every time people who have registered on the board open a new session on their browser of the forum, their browser sends the logon name and password to the board at http://www.tarotcollectors.com thus establishing who the user is and bringing up all the data specific to that individual, such as their messages.

So the user has to allow cookies to do what cookies were designed for !

Howdy, long time lurker, infrequent poster here *waves*

Is there any way you can refine the registration process?  Can you make it so you can ask some questions of the member trying to sign up, based on what they answer can determine whether or not you approve the membership. If they are spam memberships hopefully (in my experience) the questions will weed them out.  Then you can deny them before they even get the chance to post on the board.

I'm not sure if your Admin Control panel will allow it, but I thought I'd mention it anyway?

This is already implemented. People trying to register have to do a simple piece of arithmetic which changes randomly.

The users who are putting up the inappropriate advertisements are not robots but have actually had to manually register. Sadly such people parasitise discussion forums and if not immediately dealt end up overwhelming the serious discussions. These users seem to emanate from China.

It's too bad you can't make them answer a bunch of tarot specific questions...if they can't name a single Marseilles deck, or 4 decks based on the RWS model, they shouldn't be registering here!

Maybe the forum software doesn't have that option?  I don't know the etiquette for mentioning other forums but one registration process I know of, asks for questions that require typed responses.

Those questions are:

How exactly did you find us?Referral? (from who/where) Internet search? Please be specific..

How many tarot decks do you have?

Tell us your favourite deck...

How long have you been interested in tarot?

Based on those answers given, determines whether the membership gets approved or not.

Well, such a complex interrogation is not possible within the software structure of the board.

Even if it were, I would not implement this. I have far too much to do with my time that reading through three or four of such entries every day. This Forum is only a very small component of my workload.

The forum currently has a core group of serious collectors and can easily survive being closed to new subscribers. I did that before when we had a troublesome person who just kept rejoining under another name and things continued fine.

The spam mails have not yet reached the stage when it is interrupting serious discussions. If it does I will just close the forum to new subscribers.
