Some years ago I first came across the US based company The Gamecrafter. I bought a few tarots from their list and was happy with the items they sent. I recently bought another batch, and came to realise the way in which this company works.
It is a method for artists to self-publish their card designs using a print-on-demand system. We are all familiar with print-on-demand books, Gamecrafter is print-on-demand cards.
The artist just has to upload their card images and artwork for the box using various templates and Gamecrafter will print out a single copy of the Tarot. Artists can opt to buy a bunch of copies and market these themselves, or else let Gamecrafter do the marketing, and then send the artist a royalty payment. I sell a number of my books using a similar system called Blurb, and it is very easy and straightforward.
An artist using the Gamecrafter does not need to invest their capital and time, rushing about trying to find an economical printer, or trying to raise funds from friends or family, but can concentrate on creating the artwork. This can then be quickly realised as a set of cards, nicely boxed.
Having bought over 20 items I can attest that the quality of Gamecrafter's printing is excellent, well beyond what most self-publishing artists can achieve.
Gamecrafter is a way forward for artists to have their work professionally printed.

I'm looking into using them myself in the future, having come back to the tarot world. I've been doing some back-reading on AT, and quality-wise, most seemed to like their stuff, with majority of the issues being with packaging and costs of shipping outside the US. Have you checked out printerstudio.com? A lot of the indie deck designers have been using them. I prefer the card quality myself (as a collector and reader, I've never designed a deck myself). They offer a linen cardstock that's lovely.

Does printerstudio.com act as a print on demand publisher,
or it it merely a company that prints an edition of cards and leaves it up to the artist to sell these ?
The strength of the Gamecrafter is that they print on demand and thus the artist does not require an upfront capital investment. They also sell and post copies to customers, so the artist does not have to sort out all the problems of selling items.

I was thinking of using Gamecrafter for non EU/UK sales of my next tarot (some time away still), as shipping costs to the UK (even for 1 pack) seem very expensive. My idea was to print a small edition here just for UK and EU sales. I was going to buy an existing tarot from their site to see and feel the quality of the card and printing before using them for all sales, but after reading this page on the Gamecrafter site I think that shipping and associated costs may be too off-putting for many UK buyers.

You could buy a batch of copies from the Gamecrafter at a discount and then sell them direct to UK and European customers.
As to the quality of their printing, I have bought about 40 decks from them over the years. I find their print quality perfectly acceptable, and certainly better than most people who attempt to self-publish.

I did think of that, but shipping costs and import duty add a lot to the cost per pack that I'd have to pass on to buyers, and to take advantage of the best bulk price would mean much money tied up and an awful lot of decks to sell. :)
Thanks for the thumbs up re. quality though - it all helps in the difficult matter of decision making.
I wonder if BlueToy found a way to sign his latest tarot published with Gamecrafter. It looks fabulous.

I've just received a package (from Hong Kong), of samples from Printer's Studio which included a large promotional postcard with:
New! Sell your designs.
Make money by selling your designs, photos or images on a wide range of custom products at PrinterStudio with ease.
I found the relevant page on their site for uploading the cards for this service, but without taking the next step (my images are not ready to upload), there's no way of knowing what sort of royalty would be due to the artist. I've emailed them to ask, and will post when they reply.
