Last week I received a rather wonderful gift from a friend I have known since the 1980s. Some years ago this friend, a surrealist artist, told me that he had created a tarot deck during the 1980s, as part of his personal exploration of esoterics and kabbalah. He has now decided to donate his original artwork to my collection. I do have a few sets of original artwork, but this one is very special. It is a 78 card deck and full of invention but with a firm structure. I have set up a page for the Robert Ellaby Tarot which shows more of the card designs, and explores some of the symbolism he uses.

The cards you have posted of this deck are quite impressive and thank you for showing all of the pips. It is wonderful to see such accessible images for the minors which are so purely evocative of the qabalistic correspondences. It is sometimes difficult to get beyond a purely intellectual reading of these cards when the depictions are simply numerical repetitions of the suit emblems; and narrative versions like the RWS-style seem to limit to near-caricatures of meaning because of their specificity and tradition; this is not to say that the emblems and narratives are not beautifully rendered or insightful in many cases. Only that Mr. Ellaby's images show a clear and deep understanding of the qabalistic meaning, which is not often the intent of many decks. I am wondering if Forum members can identify other published decks that might compare in this area.
I hope someday you will consider publishing this deck. I believe it will be well-received by collectors, readers and aspirants alike. I am certainly curious to see what the remaining trumps look like, and I would be a buyer.
Thanks again and please convey my appreciation to the artist if possible. I also enjoyed his essay re: A Christian Mandala, finding many more points with which I agree than otherwise.

i add my name in the list of people who would like to have a copy of Ellaby tarot,i haven't ever had courage to say,but i have always thought that if Mr Mc Lean would print the deck it would be a wonderful thing,we all of the Forum ,i think ,would be interested to buy a copy and it could be a little help for the wonderful work he is doing for the Tarot world

I will think about it. However, the problem is always cost. Printing a 78 card deck necessitates a price of at least 70 UK pounds ($100). There are so few collectors willing to pay such a price. I will end up losing money and having scores of unsold decks hanging around for five or more years.
As an example, I published the Marie-Claude Purro Tarot in 2006 in an edition of 100 copies. I found her artwork outstanding, but few others have. Now nearly 7 years later, I still have five copies left to sell. Such publishing can never be profitable.Last edited on Mon Mar 25th, 2013 12:37 pm by AdamMcLean

i think there are people who are willing to pay,we will not buy other and we all know that this money will go to a right cause. However we can do a list with names and book the deck before you print,send you money,so you will not be charged of costs,what do you think about,people of this forum?

A third Canadian who is also English, if you do this, Adam. (though rylla no longer is...)
I would offer to carry the Canadian ones across the pond and post them if you like. Postage within Canada is - believe it or not - MORE expensive than from here - but Canada customs is a nightmare, so we'd get around that !

I have been in touch with Bob Ellaby and he is happy for me to produce an edition. I will make up some samples over the next few weeks and see if the print quality is acceptable to him.
Producing a 78 card deck is much more work, and more costly, so I will have to think very carefully about doing this.

After some discussion with the artist, Robert Ellaby, I have decided to go ahead with publishing his tarot.
He wishes it to be called the Greater Mysteries Tarot.
This is a full 78 card deck in colour. I have already begun the print layout,
and it should be published later this month, April 2013.
It will be an edition of 50 with only 30 copies for sale.
The price is still to be worked out, but it should be in the area of 60-70 UK pounds ($80-100).
As the previous tarot I produced, the W.T. Horton, sold out in only three days,
I would like to invite anyone seriously interested in Greater Mysteries Tarot to contact me

I printed the Greater Mysteries Tarot by Robert Ellaby over the weekend and it is now available as a edition limited to only 50 signed and numbered copies. As the artist gets ten copies and I keep back ten copies, there are only 30 copies for sale.
Nine have been sold so far to advanced orders. So there are only 21 still for sale as of midday Tuesday 23rd April.
This is a full 78 card deck. I have tried to keep the price as low as possible.

One thing I forget to mention was that Robert Ellaby created his tarot actual size as a set of cards. Many artists create their tarot imagery in a much larger format which can then be reduced for printing. So I have printed his card designs the same size as the originals.
The response to the deck has been very good with only nine left to sell. Publishing my Art Tarots in these small editions of 50, with only 30 for sale, seems to be a good way to sell these, as the edition goes in only a few days and consequently their second hand value immediately rises making these a good investment. Of course, one has to choose good material.
