...that was a long one, Quid!...basically my approach to the cards is similiar to yours, they lead me to further investigation and study of the artwork or the historical, mythological or cultural theme of the deck. i am looking forward to the boticelli too.
will you or anyone else be attending the Reader's Studio tarot conference, end of April?

I rarely go out of the house so don't go to conferences.
Similar to reading a book, how can you read a deck without understanding? No wonder so many folks say things are "unreadable." They have no knowledge of the subject.

Some humans are very dull.

i have been reading about the knights templar for many years....way before that poorly written novel came out by dan brown. i picked up the Templar Tarot deck by Allen Chester, several months ago...i like some of the art work... but Allen is inconsistant in his style...it appears as though he painted the deck over a period of years and he tried various painting techniques at different times...some work better than others.
in recent months the tarot has inspired me to study astrology...its an interest that's been on the back burner for many years....the planetary orbs have entered my subconscious...they are coming out in my recent artwork...see link below for an image i created in photoshop..it will become part of a larger collage painting in acrylic on wood.

I didn't read the Da Vinci Code--just saw the movie and bought the playing cards by Waddingtons. <g> I can't believe people take it a a scholarly study.

the ashcroft-norwicki deck must be out of print? it is unavailble at amazon. as a new deck...the corresponding book is selling used for up to $55.00...it is unclear if this price includes the deck.
i have dolores ashcroft-norwicki's Your Unseen Power:Real Training in Western Magic,published by Sounds True. would send you a photo of it, plus some of my italian fresco volumes, but my camera is on the blink.

The Ashcroft-Nowicki is out of print but I often see people trading it for a reasonable straight swap of a deck/book set. I bought mine on eBay about 4 years ago when there was a rage on for it. I paid about $40 for it then for that reason. Most people consider it "unreadable" so don't lose heart it might turn up. The Hanged Man is Hamlet--one of my favourite cards of any deck.
Italian frescoes--there is a series of huge art books. I have two of them, the Giotto one pictured being the latest. The whole series:
1) - Italian Frescoes: The Early Renaissance 1400-1470 by Steffi Roettgen
2) - Italian Frescoes: The Flowering of the Renaissance 1470-1510 by Steffi Roettgen
3) - Italian Frescoes: High Renaissance and Mannerism 1510-1600 by Julian Kliemann
4) - Italian Frescoes: The Age of Giotto, 1280-1400 by Joachim Poeschke
5) - Italian Frescoes: In the Baroque Era by Steffi Roettgen Final volume --just published NEW!!!
I have 1) and 4)--would like the whole series but I don't have the money or the room to store them. Have you got any in this series? My book on Sienese Painting that I got to go with the Grail Tarot also deals with frescoes.
I could buy another bookcase. . . .

Speaking of the Templar Tarot, I think Alan Chester might have gotten discouraged by the enormity of the task of creating 78 cards and thus simplified the Minors and the painting technique for those. My theory anyway.
I like that deck, and I once paired it with Mr. Shakey to good effect.
I like to do quickie scans of cards with quotes or poetry and such--just helps me connect to a deck, and also gets me thinking of lateral connections. One of the joys of having a collection is playing with it.

Oh great so you have the same book in the fresco series as I do.
I love the Fandex series--I have 3 of them so far.
The fresco books I have were used to get court cards for a Bicycle playing card deck I am revamping with collage. It's strictly geometric collage, I wanted it to look like an antique deck.
I turned the Jokers into a male and female significator card. The pips and Aces are done in straight geometric patterns, so the courts seem very special. I'm only up to the 4s so have a bit to go.

what a good idea!!! your 'antique' deck is very elegant and beautiful!!!...colors are perfect.

I've got two "transformed" cards from a trade we did and they are by my bedside as "pretty things to hold in my hand while reading." They don't work as permanent bookmarks because the cats are too attracted to the dangles!

Acucent - All the Jacks have hats of some sort.
Thanks Debra - I am scrambling to make a bunch of stuff for a show, and I made the final 6 bookmarks to sell.
For those who missed it (99.9% of members) these bookmarks were made from 13 extra game cards and titling cards from a children's card deck about the weather that I bought to pair with my own weather oracle I'm creating. I collaged over them with public domain art printed on high quality photo paper and varnished both sides twice and put fiber and dangly beads. Long story and very boring.

The pips. I haven't varnished the 3s yet. I laid out the 4s but had to move them to work on jewellery for this upcoming show, and consequently have bits of paper triangles everywhere--so will have to redo them.
Lesson: Always collage something right after you lay the pieces down.
I'm glad I started putting these bits in my own collection thread as I don't think many folks are interested in revamping decks as I am. This is a vital part of my playing card collection, and my overall collection method in general. The second playing card deck I'm doing is going to be casein and pen and ink on watercolour paper--collaged over the card face, with wrapping paper backs. So, a modern abstract look to contrast with the first revamped antique-look deck.

wow, i am impressed! your work is meticulous and you are such a good designer! the circles are perfectly ringed with black outlines...everyone viewing should realize the painstaking work that goes into making cards... glueing can be tricky...even when i use glue sticks, which are kind of dry, the glue can spill out onto the backgound and make the background paper unclear and sticky.

While I do take credit for being meticulous, I have to explain that the circles were done in Photoshop. These people are scans--several of the frescoes had water damage and fading (the real art that is) that I cleaned up in Photoshop. Then there was the work of getting them printed with even scale, saturation and balance of colour to look like a set. Most of these were not taken from the same piece of art, so that was hours of work.
Then I spent 10 hours more gathering the small patterns and printing themor scanning in fabric or wallpaper.
Cutting out around circles regularly is another thing. <g>
Card gluing--I hear ya! Pressing time, drying time, varnishing, collage. It's quite time consuming--you have to be in the mood to fiddle. I used two different glues for this, one for the backgrounds directly onto the old laminated card, and one for the collage. Adhesives are an entire world unto themselves, use the wrong one and your piece is ruined.

Playing cards from a Dover book--some of you might own the book or the book and CD-ROM of the clip art. "Antique Playing Cards : A Pictorial History" by Henry René D'Allemagne.
I recommend the Dover book if you're into collecting history books for your card collection. Another playing card history book that is illustrated is Collectible Playing Cards by Frederique Crestin-Billet
I don't have the money to collect antique playing cards, but the artwork and symbolism is interesting to learn about.

Somewhere in time there is an audience for iguanas, birds, medieval things, mandalas, and weird chairs, lots of weird chairs with mantids.
If not, I want to draw them anyway.

I do a lot of detail with ink and coloured pencil that takes hours per image, so it's not really suitable for a group project.
Hope that doesn't offend you. People are unequal in their commitment to excellence, and my experiences have been unpleasant in this regard with several types of media. There is a very uneven quality of work and serious effort in my experience. It's such a letdown for me and a waste of my energy that I no longer join in on stuff like this.
Sorry, don't feel offended, your experiences might have been more positive.

no i am not offended at all...that was an honest and good response...i too would expect high quality work....i graduated from Pratt Institute... BFA....and I used to work as a corporate designer. (hated corporate...got out of that)!
just brain storming and imagining here--if there ever is a collaborative deck, perhaps it would be juried by a committee...

image is from the ARTIST'S INNER VISION TAROT...this collaborative deck hangs together with great use of color and imagery....well designed cards...i find it is very enjoyable to look at....although i dont use it for card reading.

Very interesting--now that's a collaborative deck that people put some effort into. I like several of the them--The Hermit and the Papesse
I have the Artist's Inner Vision which I like too. I have used it for daily draws or clarifying cards. The Fool was one card from this I wrote an essay for in relation to Palamedes entitled "Who is Really the Fool?" Did Palamedes die a Fool or was Odysseus really the fool in the story? I think we all know the truth!
Do you have the Fantasy Showcase Tarot? Another collaborative deck by SF and Fantasy people. One of my favourites.

Rolling along with the playing card revamp. Debra will be proud of me!
I've done the Jokers, Courts, and through the 7s now. Varnishing needed on 3s and up, but I expect to finish it all by the end of the week. My original goal was the end of August but I had to do up items for the craft show I did, and now that it's over I can clear this project up.
Here's a snap of the pips so far. As you can see on the 2s, the varnish darkens them a bit and I've used fairly low-contrast patterns to make it look faded and antique-y.
I can hardly wait to finish them and get going on my casein and ink abstracts for the other playing card deck I'm revamping.

Thanks guys, I have so enjoyed doing these. No pressure for perfection, just fun.
Unfortunately Debra, while they have the same feel as the cards you have, they have warped somewhat. I think because the paper I used on the front background is heavier than that used on the back. On the ones I did for you I used the same paper, so an equal "pull" which kept them flat.
However, I still might weight them down for a time and see if I can rectify that. The significators turned out well, so it might have been the initial weighting that wasn't long enough. They do need to be pressed longer than my bookbinding projects which are done on illustration board that is made not to warp.
I'd rather have this collage one be imperfect than the abstract one I'm going to paint, so hopefully I can learn from this one.
