This deck was a surprise gift from my Aunt (who last year gifted me with the Prediction Tarot out of the blue!)

As a divination deck they are extremely readable, and have such wonderful images!

Who can tell me something about the game of tarock?

I was wondering why are there 21 trumps, and a full set of courts... but hearts and diamonds that range from ace-4 and spades and clubs that number 7-10?

It would seem that you have a tarock pack with 54 cards or should have--it seems a bit odd that you are missing a Trump, there should be 22. Some tarock decks have a full 78 cards. The two I have are 78 decks so are exactly like conventional tarot decks with pips.

Various European countries do things differently for card games. They've got Skat and Tarock and several other little games that seem to change regionally.

Try this to start:

How Interesting! Thanks for the links and info quid!

I thought it seemed strange for there to be only 21 trumps! (as well as the other "missing" pips.) They all seem to fit perfectly in the box. In fact, I am not sure another card would have fit in there! :P

You should have 21 numbered trumps, plus the un-numbered fool.
The full courts, with A-4 hearts/diamonds and 7-10 spades/clubs is correct for tarock.
Once in a while you will see a (vintage) regular 78 tarot that has been shortened this way.
(I have an old Italian deck that has been cut to 54 like this.)

I don't know how to play, though...

Doh! Of course!

Thanks OnePotato!

At first I thought the fool might have gone wandering...but there he was disguised, and hanging out with the diamond court!

I love the historical, sort of cavalier look of these cards!

Judging from the label, my guess would be that this one is pre 1950s.

I have the coolest Aunt!

CL Wuest of Frankfurt Germany is said to have originated this design in the mid 19th century. In the 20th century, French card makers such as Grimaud came out with later versions always with 78 cards and were later modified so there are now corner indices.

Tarocks is the best card game around. It's bohemian. There are actually 22 trump. You should have some kind of joker which is the 22nd trump. Everyone plays it a little differently.
