A year or so ago I put my name down on the waiting list for a copy of the Knitting Tarot. Today I received an email saying it would likely be ready in October.  It seems to consist of  simple black and white cartoon-like artwork with a 'knitting' theme. It looks fun.

I got a notice that they'll be ready in October.

What really impressed me is that they used a Letterpress and had stamps made for each card. Nice to see the old printing method hasn't disappeared entirely.

People that go their own way in deck design are interesting. They seem quite committed to the project.

The Knitting Tarot is now up for sale in an edition limited to 170 copies. The price is $95.

It is not high art but probably well worth buying for those tarot collectors who like quirky decks.

My copy of the  Knitting Tarot arrived today. It comes with a beautifully printed hardbound book. The deck of 78 cards is printed on large cards using letterpress, an amazingly time-intensive process. I know this from personal experience as, back in 1977, I printed my first book using letterpress on a small Adana hand press and it took me all summer. The images on the cards are printed using wood mounted type-high process engraved metal blocks. These used to be called 'zincos' in the UK.  A rather nice touch is that included with the deck and book is one of these printing blocks, thus creating the situation in which it will prove impossible (or very expensive) for the publishers of this deck to reprint it. Obviously only a maximum of 78 customers will be able to receive a block. My copy is numbered 21 out of the edition of 170, so there will no doubt at my time of writing still be some of these left to distribute. I got the Five of Skeins.

This is a really quirky idea, and a wonderfully realised hand production. The book is also hand printed using letterpress and is numbered the same as the deck. It may not be high art but this is a deck and book you will regret not buying.

I received an email through  the Knitting Tarot mailing list, saying that they had had a good response, and that they were now down to double figures. As they have made an edition of 170, I suppose this means they have less than 70 left, and that they have sold 100 copies in a single month ! Maybe it is a good time to think about buying a copy.

It would make a charming companion to the Tarot of The Tailors
