I missed out on the last one, & I would love to take part in a project if another one is done. Of course it may be longer than just 1 year, I'm sure that this was a LOT of work! :ok  So I'm just wondering if there will be a further one in the future, or if anyone has even THOUGHT that far ahead...

I dunno how many people want to work on another one. I did hear Skad1 whisper about a 2010 deck already. Or maybe she is all burned out from all the work on the 2009 deck.. are you still here, Skad?

Anyway, if there is a 2010 deck, I will participate again :ro.

Well,

OF COURSE there will be a 2010 deck.  I've been concentrating on getting the 2009 packed up and shipped out.  And the final summary for the project.

I didn't mind running the project, the only part that has seemed slow was the final part here, getting them printed and then mailed out.  I'd kinda like to get the decks in your hot little hands to see if every one is happy with then, and if everyone wants me to herd the cats on another.

There has been alot of learning on this deck, so I know what needs to be established up front.   That should help everyone.

Should be set the beginning of the year as the start on the next one?  How about a theme for this one?

I do remember Papoon suggesting that the next deck be a 78-card all-Happy Squirrel deck...

Yes there will be a 2010 deck :ceand I'm allready all happy about it

and off course after the great work you did we want you again dear Skad1 :tt

as for a theme hmmm 2010 is the "International Year of Biodiversity" but also "International Year of Communications" and also "International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures" so perhaps we could do something around that...

That's perfect! The squirrel will surely bring biodiversity to the deck. And through its happiness, it will communicate its joy at the rapprochement of the tarot and squirrel cultures.

Genius!

squirrels have a culture? wow  :c
although indeed the one from the touchstone looks learned and the one from the el Tarot de Marcelino looks as if he (is it a he?) is ready to give an entire elegy

Just as a point of interest, the fortune teller on the Simpsons who had the Happy Squirrel card, predicted Lisa's wedding in 2010.

The idea of participating in a collaborative deck is pretty exciting and overwhelming as I have no experience really in graphic design.  I would love the opportunity to do this however.  Can anyone suggest any good beginner programs to start playing with?  And any info on how to prepare designs into a format appropriate for a tarot card would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Karen

Photoshop works..... or any other photo programme - you can draw and paint in them. Or even MS Paint - supplied on most computers; Just make a card shaped space and go for it ! (there are a lot of free programmes on line; I don't have time to dig up the links this minute, but I MAY have posted them here somewhere.... If you need them I will look another time.)

Images into tarot - well, most of us here had no idea and winged it.... I certainly had NO IDEA what I was doing..... I suspect others didn't either - in fact, I recall someone saying exactly that and she went on to do several cards !

Thanks.  I will search and see if I can find the list of programs.  Looking for something basic and not too costly to start experimenting!

Oh, I remember that person, gregory!!  And I also remember how you said, hey, Go for it!  That's the advice I would give others who are shy but interested.

I am pretty sure any Squirrel that would end up on the 8, 9 or 10 of Swords will be pretty miserable.. don't you think so? :hp

Not if that Squirrel is holding all the swords!

I love that idea by the way...I have now made 7 different happy squirrel cards...a whole deck of them would be outrageous fun

Hmm, true.. I guess he would be a bit less miserable. Although it can't be fun having to balance all those swords:bl.

Oh.. are we gonna be expecting a complete Happy Squirrel deck by you soon, Chronata? If you are making one, I am standing in line already. Just got your Noir and I LUV IT! :tt

I just got my deck. WOW. To save anyone here having to use all that ink and cutting cards and so on - would we use the same printer again ?

And yes - skad for cat-herder.

And no more than one major per person, again, PLEASE ! Landscape WOULD be interesting.

Not sure if I have ever seen/have/had a landscape style deck.

It sounds like there is alot of interest in a squirrel deck.  I keep thinking the Happy Squirrel card as kind of an extra comment card, rather than the whole deck.

How about animals in general?  Or each suit having a animal, like pentacles-earth burrowing animals, swords-air animals, cups-water based, and swords-microscopic?  Or whatever.  The majors could be pets, or large animals (elephants, rhinos, etc) or ?

Or each suit having one animal, eg. cats, dogs, or candids, felines, etc.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Monsters one.  It took me forever to get it once I decided I had to have it.

The thing about landscape is they seem to be more 'art' decks, and probably not as good for actually reading with.  Those of you who read more would probably know more about that.

The thing about circular ones is it would probably really drive up production costs.  And I don't like them, but that is a personal opinion, not a reason.

I can't begin to imagine the complications of trying to create a circular card.... but I think landscape cards would read OK.....

Costs of production would be a nightmare. I bet your print shop would rebel.....

Oh, I think they would just smile, and start adding the costs up.  And smile some more.  They are really nice people.  Who, by the way, thought there were some really neat cards and they liked the idea.  It was a new idea to them, they had never printed our type of cards before.  They had done greeting cards and business cards, but never playing cards, and definitely never tarot cards.

If anyone is interested in having anything printed by them, let me know.  I can give you their info, and am willing to liaison if you want.  (It might cost you a deck tho.)

For me, the production of the 2009 deck is just ending.  But I realize for many of you, it was over last June or July.  So what I am proposing is two decks, 2010a and 2010b.  Now that I know what to expect to get it printed that part will be much easier for me.  There would be an absolute deadline of June 15th and November 15th.

As far as theme, how about 2010a a nostalgia deck, and 2010b a future deck.  One a look at what we feel the influence the past had on a card, and one where we think it will go in the future?

I am planning to set up a diagram for the card, showing dimensions of inside opening and borders, and suggested design size.  It would be the same as the one we just did, but to help the newbies.  Plus a written procedure to spell out size, dates, etc.  All I need is time to write it, I have it written in my head, but that doesn't help anyone else.  Plus I think we should initially restrict cards to 3, one major and two minor, until everyone has had a chance to get a card.  Unless gregory want to do all 4 of a number (like she did all the 3's)

Do you think I should do polls the way I did at the beginning of the 2009 deck?  I'm assuming 78 card deck, but we need to decide theme or not.

They could do one card on both decks, or only participate in one deck.  Or we could do 22 card decks.

Hello All,

When I returned home from extensive holiday travel, our collaborate deck was there waiting for me.YAY!

We have all been viewing the cards online during the months of its completion. The printed deck is far more beautiful...the printing is luminous. I can't thank Skad enough for such a HUGE undertaking!

Count me in for whatever YOU ALL want to do for 2010!!!!

It wasn't really over for me in June or July, as I enjoyed seeing the  newly posted cards as they were finished and looking forward to publication, so I'm not quite sure of the logic behind the idea of two decks. To be honest, I think it would be pushing it a bit, and maybe take some of the excitement  out of the project. It's lovely to look forward to one (rare and special) deck per year, but if there are two they'll only be half as special (if you know what I mean).

Also it'll double the work for you and Ly and double any problems that arise from drop outs etc etc...

I hate to pour cold water, but our community effort worked so well last year, and I have a feeling that doing two decks might destroy that balance.

But... skad, if the act of publishing itself has become something you're into, there are great decks out there that remain unpublished, and Adam can't do them all...

Pen

I also think two decks might be a bit too much. We could always start with one deck, with deadline of june/july and then see if there are more people wanting to do a second deck. That way we can see how we feel about it then and not already have to commit right now.

This sounds like loads of fun!

I don't know much about graphic design as I am not an artist, but am willing to give it a go!

I could commit to doing something for ONE deck ... I have never done this before, so don't want to bite off more than I can chew.

Lucky for you guys who got to do the 2009 deck! I took a look at the cards and they look marvelous.

We did one in 2008, too !

Two in 2010 I think WOULD be pushing it ! :n

But as someone said - we could do one and see if we feel like it afterwards.....

As a newbie to the whole idea of graphic design, but  with an intense desire to be a part of something like this, I would say go with one deck to start and see where it leads us.  It sounds like there is interest from more folks like me, so hopefully the process could take that into account.  Your just created deck is amazing - looking forward to being a part of such an awesome project!:ok

and then there is GIMP – google for it….

greggors, all of these programs look lovely! Too bad I'm on a Mac (an OLD one) :ee and it can't do any of these! :cs

So, I can just see me plugging away, using a photo of my back yard ... :cl or an alligator perhaps ...

There are free Mac ones too..... I just don't know where they are or how good they are - it's a long time since I last used a Mac regularly. Ask a Mac user !

I do have Photoshop. :hp

But I'm not a "pro" at it by any means.

I'm just happy to participate! It sounds like fun. :ro

Sounds good. I will check out that book! Maybe I can find a cheap copy.

What might limit me is that I have no scanner.

So if I have an object that I want to put into a card, I can't scan it and then add it via Photoshop.

I will probably make my card by hand! Then I can use various types of media and have fun. :ce
