Hi All,

I am interested in a first edition 1970 version of the Morgan Greer Tarot. Does anyone have first hand knowledge of how to tell this edition by the box and cards? I would also be interested in the same info for the 1979 edition.

Thanks,
Jeremy

I assume you've read some of the old threads at Aeclectic Tarot.

It was first published in 1979 so that's the first edition. There were two early boxes, one brown the other blue; both have lift-off lids rather than lids that tuck. I'm not sure sure anyone knows for sure which one is the earliest; hopefully someone will come along and prove me wrong.

There's a version with black borders on the cards though these are pretty rare; sometimes it's said these came first. But in Vol. 3 of his Encyclopedia, Suart Kaplan says a borderless version came first; then black borders were added which were subsequently dropped and they went back to no borders.

Thank you Abrac. Yes I have read all of the threads on Aeclectic , and they also have some discussion of the placement and randomness of the stars on the back (as well as the back being screened vs printed). I think your advice on the box is helpful. Thanks again.

I believe the first version of the Morgan Greer has a brown box with a $7.95 price on the lower back. The font on the box is a little different (plainer?) and there are no stars on the ends of the box. The card backs have a bit of a washed out blue colour sort of like faded jeans, the later versions have a darker solid colour. As for the stars on the back being different, well, I don't believe that would change which version the deck is. Who knows, maybe it does I have never really dug into that mystery. Hope that helps and good luck hunting.

I should also add that the LWB in the first edition is the full size (height) of the cards and is stapled and has black ink. The later LWBs are fold outs.

Congratulations on finding a first edition, too bad the one card is really creased. I really like the washed out look of the backs. If I ever come across an extra King I will let you know.
