1 - Ancient Minchiate Etruria. (Lo Scarabeo 1996)

2 - Art Nouveau Tarot (Lo Scarabeo 2000)
Artist Antonell Castelli. A very romantic deck. Mostly female figures in florid and authentic looking art nouveau style.

3 - Bosch Tarot (LO scarabeo 2000)
I used one of the cards for a bookmark, and then gave that book away!

4 - Builders of the Adytum Tarot (B.O.T.A.)

5 - The Medieval Scapini Tarot (US Games 1985)
My favorite.

6 - Mantegna Tarot (Llewellyn 2000)

7 - The Royal Fez Moroccan Deck (US Games - New York, LWB c. 1975)
A very special deck I found in the window of a little shop in San Francisco dedicated to mermaids and sea goddesses. It's the only one I have that seems to be OOP. It also seems to be a bona fide 'trick deck' (some of the cards are 'marked'!).

8 - Secret Tarot (Lo Scarabeo 2000)
Artist Marco Nizzoli. Very romantic, dreamlike, futuristic, yet timeless atmospherics from this science fiction and erotic comix artist.

9 - Tarot of the Master (Lo Scarabeo)

10 - Pamela Colman Smith Commemorative Set (U.S. Games)
A real fine production. a real must have, I say !

11 - Book of Thoth (Lo Scarabeo)

12 - The Hermetic Tarot (U.S. Games)

13- Blank Tarot Cards "Tarottee back" (U.S. Games)

Well, I was excited today to receive my first deck of cards ordered online. The Tarot of the Master (Lo Scarabeo). Originally published in 1893. Artist Giovanni Vacchetta. A beautiful deck that is reminiscent of the engravings of the 18th and 17th Centuries, which themselves recalled the art of the Greco-Roman pantheon.

Unfortunately, someone decided it would be a great idea to put a hideous green border around the cards with words in it ! One word in 5 different languages, that assigns a meaning to each card. On all the cards, even the pips. This totally destroys the magic of the images, and I just can't find words to say what a really bad idea this was...

That is LS's basic modus operandi, they do that with probably 99% of their decks. Drives me crazy, too. I've quit buying their decks because of it.

Trim the border off. You won't regret it.

Thanx for the sympathy peeps. I was as upset as a 13 year old at a birthday party!

My list above has 5 decks by Lo Scarabeo out of 9. After reading your post I went and examined each one. The Ancient Minchiate has no words in the borders. The other 4 do. But there is a big difference. These words are in the standard place for card titles. At the top and bottom. That's okay with me. What gets me about the Tarot of the Master is that these words are strung along the edge up the left side of the card. They do not look like they are part of the design. They stand out like a sore thumb. Aaagh ! I just hate it. And I was so enamoured of this decks artwork when I saw it last week, and I was so happy that the seller had It in the mail the next day, and I got it the day after that. Oh well, I guess I'm just going to have to find another new deck to buy to assuage my disappointment :)

Thanx for the suggestion. But if I'm going to pay 25$ for a deck, then spend 1 or 2 hours trimming it to make it usable, well jeez, I might as well make my own. Oh waah, hey, that is a good idea !!! By golly - I'm going to make my own darn deck...

I can tell you their version of the Visconti-Sforza with the gold has the same thing, the titles up the left side in several languages. Trimming the borders would also kind of mess up the symmetry of the backs.

Most of their other decks seem to have the title clusters either at the top or bottom. One exception is the Vampires Tarot of the Eternal Night which does not, and I love them for that! It's one of my favorite decks.

Thanks, gregory. However, the "on-line" version has a less than desirable typeface, which I have changed to a more aesthetic font (as shown above). We all try and do our bit. Cheers!

Demian - Thanx for your kind and generous offer !
I decided to google around and see if I could find this online deck myself. I did, and so it saves you the trouble. But thanx for the tip !

Re: VACHETTA line drawings (78) with 'appropriate' type font. Hello hoo! My offer still stands. Send me a PM through this forum with an email address where you would like to receive the scans and I will hapily send them to you. I would send four (4) emails, with images of the complete deck for you to download. I have done this for others, and there has never been a complication or difficulty. ~Demian

Demian - So sorry I left you hanging on your offer, so impolitely. Obligations have commanded my time and distracted me.

I won't even bother you about those emails, as I won't have time to do anything with them now. - Again thanx so much for the kind offer.

Between beautiful San Franciso and The Royal Fez Moroccan you'll be fine! :)

Today I picked up the Pamela Colman Smith Commemorative Set. 38$ with tax, and I am so happy with it. The deck is really fine.. The entire package is very well done. I've already written and posted a lengthy review in my 'Pamela Colman Smith Shrine' at forum.tarothistory.com

This is a real treasure. The deck alone is worth the price !

I just got 'The Book of Thoth' or the 'Eteilla III' deck by Lo Scarabeo. It' very nice and has an antique magical quality I like. It has an interesting new history. Over at the Tarot History Forum, member 'Pen' has made some wonderful observations which indicate that some of the art is related to artwork in the Nuremburg Chronicle (also known as the Liber Chronicarum, or Die Schedelsche Weltchronik).
http://forum.tarothistory.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=638
This appears to be a new discovery, made by 'Pen" (not in any book), and is well worth a read.

The Hermetic Tarot -
I picked this up at Fields Books today.
I think I rifled through the sample deck a little too quickly in the bookstore before I ordered it. I thought it was a montage of alchemical engravings. It is actually a cult deck which deviates somewhat from the standard Tarot. Almost every card has a second title on the bottom which begins with the words- 'Lord of the...." A few have 'Queen of the...' and 'Daughter of the...' However, there are entirely too many 'Lords' and not enough 'Ladies' in the deck for my liking. The artwork is quite nice though, and does express some of the baroque complexity of Renaissance iconography. I just might give it away on a special occasion.

I once had a friend who needed to come up with a gift for someone who had done him a favor. I had an unopened duplicate of the Medieval Scapini Tarot. I gave it to him to give to her. It turned out she was a pagan or witch or wiccan or something, and among her circle it is customary to give Tarot decks as gifts. The whole thing went over smashingly and everyone was delighted. Maybe this deck has such a fate in store

Added Feb 15 2011 - I take it back. Though the extra card titles are mostly 'Lord' this and 'Lord' that, the court cards have Kings, Queens, Knights, and Princesses. That is 4 more Ladies than the average deck, where Jacks or Pages would normally be instead of the Princess in this deck. I have also decided that I really like the art. It has a real 60's look to it. I'm keeping it for myself and will never give it away, never.

blank Tarot cards
I forgot to add that when I was in Fields Books and bought the 'Book of Toth' Tarot (Eteilla III), I found a deck of these for sale for 8$ (U.S.). I got them, even though I doubt I will ever use them, on the premise that if I pass something up, I may never see it again and wish I had gotten it when it was in front of me.
:hp
They are from U.S Games
http://www.usgamesinc.com/product.php?productid=1097

I asked the salesperson if she knew wether they were coated. She said they are lightly coated. A google did not turn up anything solid on wether this interferes with the drawing medium. I haven't opened them because I will never find the time to do an entire deck, and it will just get them dirty and ruined. But, since I now know they are readily available from U.S. Games (and fairly inexpensive), I might open them and draw on a few anyway just to test them and report back here in case anyone would like to know. I've got a lot of old unused art supplies lying around:?

Demian Brenner-Gould, it seems like you might be an artist. Maybe this will be of interest to you.

hi hoo! the blank cards are deceptive: lighter weight than printed decks. artwise flimsy. but provocative nonetheless. blanks are good karma, and all my decks have two, even if made by myself. it invites pure energy to the moment. of course there is a further mystery, about the two "missing" cards, but that's simple: the lunar nodes (north and south) are not physical, per se, and so not included (physically) in the tarot. look for them in gemini and sagitarrius (exalted) when pondering why there are 22 cards in the majors, which beg 24. 2 are there as shadows.

we should have a show of hands: how many collectors here have the shadow cards?

I just couldn't stand it no more, so I went and opened the package. But guess what ? All my old art supplies are dried up ! Almost all. I still had some various pens and markers left that work.

I did some tests on the U.S. Games Blank Tarot Deck, and started to post here, but I decided to start a new thread in the ' Decks in Progress' sub-forum where it might develop into something useful instead of being buried here.
