Back in January this year I announced a project to devise a database of unpublished tarot designs. There are so many wonderful depictions of tarot that never achieved publication and I felt we must find some way to list and draw attention to these. Stacy Flinn has volunteered to take on the task of creating the entries for this database, and I will edit and structure it for display on my website. There are currently 168 entries. You can see the latest version of this here

Wow. Good idea, thanks Stacy and Adam!

I can add a bit of information:

1. pictures for the 303 and the Blue Urn are the same (?)

2. Chalice: published by Adam McLean ;)

3. Creator’s Path: artist “Anna Means Grace” is Anna Mills Raimondi

4. Marie White: This is the “Mary-El,” which is published in two editions: A self-published majors + aces, and a Schiffer 78-card version

5. Nicolo d'Alessandro Tarot: Mr. La-luna says this tarot is published in book form: http://mr-laluna.blogspot.com/2011/08/disegnare-non-stanca-tarocchi-ed-altre.html

6. Salt Doll tarot: Apparently available self-published from Baby_Dream: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Salt-Doll-tarot-22-major-arcana-cards-deck-Self-Published-/390607904178?nma=true&si=0DAb%252ByGMk9qxrYLJAT3i%252Bz%252FcMzI%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

7. Viviani: medium is lino block prints (not woodblock); Tarot Garden lists this (one of three by the same name) as printed in a limited edition of 25. I’d like one, please.

What a great resource. I do however wonder what, for the purposes of the database, constitutes "unpublished." If self-publishing doesn't count as "publishing," it's going to be a pretty big database, given how many collectable tarots are self-published.

A few comments:

- The Harry Potter Tarot is by Elly Pieper. She self-publishes it and, as far as I know, it is still available for purchase.

- The Salt Doll was published in a limited edition of 1000 copies by Tarot Korea. As debra mentions, it's still available from baby_dream. It would seem to me that 1000 copies definitely qualifies as "published."

- For the Kaga-Yu Tarot, the artist goes by the name Kaga-Yu (makes sense)

- "Kingdom of Hearts" is actually "Kingdom Hearts" (That's the name of the game it's based on.)

- The Stick Figure Tarot was self-published in some substantial quantity.

- The Stygian Darkness Tarot - I may be wrong, but wasn't this the original name of what was eventually published as the Archeon Tarot? That scanned Fool is definitely the fool from the Archeon.

Of course, this database should not include self-published tarot. Information on this is not always available to Stacy who is building the database, but this will eventually be fixed.

Thanks for the corrections which we will implement in the next update. It will take some time to build this as it is an entirely volountary effort.

I intend with this database to include those tarot designs that were never printed as actual physical cards (or illustrations in books) and made publicly available.

Apart from the importance of correcting errors it would also be very helpful if members of this forum were to post information on this thread about unpublished tarot designs they know of, together with some link to a website or blog with some images and information about these.

If you don't mind a suggestion--it might be helpful to define the terminology.

For example, what is a "Rider-Waite clone"? I think of it as a very close copy, like the Radiant Rider-Waite, in which composition is preserved while there may be variation in coloration and the like (so I would not categorize Three Cats Tarot as a clone).

I prefer to use the concept of a Rider-Waite clone in a broader sense of a deck which preserved all the symbolic elements of the Rider-Waite without necessarily slavishly copying these, but translating these into another style.

This does mean that the term 'Rider-Waite' clone is not necessarily a precise one and is more suggestive, but nevertheless I think it a useful concept.

Stacy is the one who sets these parameters when constructing the database, but I have an overall editorial role, so I can edit entries if I feel they are not accurate.

I will take a look at the Three Cats Tarot and see if it qualifies, in my view.
