Robert Place's Alchemical Tarot Deck, the original 1995 Thorson's edition, is on auction on Ebay at present for over $2000. See Ebay 160155235585.

market prices in previously languishing sectors are often erratic as that arena emerges from relative obscurity, which is sometimes difficult for veteran collectors within that field to comprehend......but I've found that it's very often a "can't see the forest for the trees" situation.
over $2K for a Thorsons Alchemical may be an aberation but the situation is hardly unique and it seems to reflect an overall trend that bodes well (in the long run) for Tarot collectors.
to each their own.....who is to say that the Thorsons is not worth $2K but a rare, pristine vintage advertisement poster from the 30's or 40's is more worthy.
even in very solidly established markets, whether it be fine art, jewelry, coins, stamps etc......there is always going to be the "must have" at any cost.
Tarot collecting is no different.....it's only lacks a high profile.
If this is a sustainable trend, I welcome it.

My guess is that the two bidders are having a grudge match that has little to do with the market value of the Alchemical. I've seen it before. Perhaps both are just trying to make a point, and it's worth two grand to them. (Lucky for the seller.)
Or, maybe it's just a couple of drama-loving ghosts who will vanish when the auction ends, without paying a dime... (Unlucky for the seller.)
Sometimes tarot collecting is just like the Wild West.
Logic takes a back seat.

Will the winner actually pay $2075.01 (plus the five bucks for mailing) for a deck that normally auctions for $200 or under? We'll see.
I believe that harder-to-find-but-NOT-incredibly-rare tarot decks have gone up in price in the past five or six months...at least judging by the ones I've tracked on e-bay.
I hope this is NOT a trend!
it's strange when people "outside" the Tarot community discover something in Tarot format and go insane bidding on a particular item, just like the over-$600 for a single Hellboy Movie Death card (which I've yet to verify as a bonafide sale).
There are other instances of course but it never fails to amaze me.......people looking in from the outside, folks who collect in other fields of interest being entranced by the mystique of Tarot........but this is definitely a first.........a collector of rabbit figurines.
as for trends......truthfully, I see it as inevitable, it really isn't a wish borne purely of greed and avarice (although I will openly admit to greediness speaking strictly for myself. While I don't collect with the intentions of selling, I'm not displeased to see rarer editions commanding respect in the auction arena).
In part, I think it's an acknowledgement that Tarot art is something to be respected and valued, an artform with a legitimately documented lineage that's unique and fascinating.
each new generation that comes into the world, does so with greater awareness and with a more open mind about things the previous generation may have labeled as "alternative". It's a much more matter-of-fact attitude.
The numbers are gowing, how many Tarot readers and collectors were there 30 - 50 years ago and how many are there now? Lo Scarabeo and U.S. Games could not have or be flourishing if the numbers were static or diminished.
