OK, tell me if this is the right place to post my 2013 Sun! My Sun comes to you through the miracle of Photoshop with sources from an original photo of mine of afternoon sunlight on the wood floor in my living room created with Camera ZOOM FX, a 1719 Solar System print by Mallet and a Zuni inlaid silver Zia-style sun. Thanks, Sumada! Actually, no, it went from concept to post just like that. I did have the photo of my floor from a couple of weeks ago and I have been studying Puebloan culture and symbology lately. I wanted to put forth the view that the sun shines no matter what our world view is, abstracted modern digital photography, historical attempts at scientific description or bold spiritual symbology. Since this is a Tarot deck after all, that symbology thing dominated! |

Lovers.... Love isn't all hearts and flowers. Oops should have said: photo of a landscape-oriented painting of an UNUSUAL Cupid - who drives the lovers, in a local museum (with their permission, no flash, not for commercial use - and I don't think this forum's members is commercial... there's no PROFIT !) and photoshopped with bits from other contemporary (to the original) paintings to make it portrait shaped. LWB: The figure of the Hanged Man is lifted from a plate illustrating Arlequin Phaéton in Gherardi's Théâtre Italien, an image rich enough to yield material for at least five other trumps: the original also evokes the Knights through its depiction of the four horses that drew the chariot of the sun plunging down through the air. The Knight of Discs is based upon a hooden horse, traditionally found in eastern Kent. In contrast to the tourney horses, where the Knight is at once horse and rider, this card shows both a Hoodener, working the head, and a Jockey, temporarily mounted upon him. The Knight of Cups is based upon a tourney horse, of the kind once used in civic and church entertainments, plays and court masques, and still to be found performing alongside mummers and morris dancers. While a mast horse is a person in animal guise, this is a simulacrum of a mounted rider. The Knight of Wands is based upon a mast horse of the skull and pole type, such as the Welsh Mari Lwyd. Its head is equipped with leather ears and bottlecap eyes, the jaws wired to snap together in an alarming manner. The Knight of Swords is based upon the tourney horse depicted in the Betley Window (made somewhen between 1550-1621) now in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The rider's cheeks are indeed pierced with swords in the original; the object in the horse's mouth is a ladle, to collect money from onlookers. * Also, please note that I forgot to flip the Hanged Man before posting the image: the noose should be round his other foot. I finished 3 of my 5 cards. The other two will follow soon, I hope  . Temperance and the 6 of Pentacles are photographs of some original artwork, which was made with bamboo on velvet. That is why the background is a bit dusty. I can only take credit for the photographs and the tweaking with photoshop. I have seen the original works for years and wanted to use them. And now I finally can (with permission). They fall in the category "Tarot in real life" for me. Funny how some images are so recognisable. Dear Tarot Collectors Forum Collaborative Deck creators, It is with much sadness, a very heavy heart, acute embarrassment and sincerest apologies that I must announce I am unable to complete any cards for this year's collaborative deck. I realise this is somewhat of a monstrous shabby, given that there is so little time left for anyone else to jump into the breech, but the pressures of life, and my abysmal time management, all require that I make this decision now and not procrastinate any longer. Once again, I am truly sorry to leave you all in the lurch, and only hope that some artistic wizard with proverbial skates on undertakes to do my cards – The World and the four Aces. When you open the box to type a message there is a area just below that says 'browse', clickk that and it will open a explorer box for you to select your artwork. the artwork for the forum needs to be fairly low res to fit on the size limit, so you will need two files, one for the forum and the high resolution one to send to me. Remember everyone, you're not done until I get the high res file. |

When the Four of Swords comes up in the deck, it usually means it’s time to “chill” and get away from it all, a time to gain some strength before facing an upcoming situation, or just a time to take gain some equilibrium and re-balance. And who knows better how to do that than a cat or a dog? In this card, I substituted the more typical knight for my Bischon while he lazes in his bed and gathers his strength, no doubt, so he can zestfully chase the cat first thing in the morning. Instead of the typical mosaic of the Madonna or a Saint, I substituted a guardian Angel-dog; and all the swords are imprinted with paws and have doggie-bones for the sword hilts. The Four of Pentacles is a card that can suggest material greed, miserliness, or a desire to gain and maintain control. To represent the elements of the Four of Pentacles, I chose the Spanish Conquistador Francisco Pizarro, who in his quest for gold and power, defeated the mighty Incan Empire in Cuzco, Peru and murdered the Aztec Emperor Atahualpa after a roomful of gold was promised to Pizarro for Atahualpa’s ransom in 1533. In this card, the mighty city of Machu Picchu serves as the background, an image of Pizarro, hungrily holding his pentacles, hovers above the conquered image of Atahualpa. In many tarot decks, the Fool card generally shows a youth happily beginning his life’s journey. He holds all his possessions on a stick and is oblivious that he is about to walk off of a cliff. He’s so intoxicated with his upcoming adventures and dreams that he doesn’t notice the warning of his canine companion as it barks out a warning. In this card, the Fool is represented by the Toucan and the Crocodile is the cliff. The Toucan needs no extraneous possessions because he already has everything he needs – except, that he is so captivated by this new Crocodile encounter that he explores it without thought of possible consequences. As in the traditional card, the companion dog attempts to warn the Toucan of the danger while still staying out of reach of the Crocodile’s jaws. Judgement. The idea, that if we are virtuous, we can pass from one realm to another and find ourselves in a better place. Sometimes we pass through these realms in our lives and do not find ourselves in a better place at all, but in a more somber, realistic place. The judgment that is passed upon us in our daily lives is not always what we want, but most times you can be it will surely be what we need. Change is the only real promise of judgement, so be careful what you pray for. That's me by the way, at the alter in a beautiful church we visited in San Juan. Ok, descriptions: 9 of cups: Drawing made with pencil and inked later. Meaning: nostalgia, childhood, playfulness, memories, feeling carefree. 6 of Swords: Drawing made with pastel. Meaning: travel, journey, getting over a rough time, moving from turbulence to calm (from the rough, stormy sea to the peaceful light). 6 of Wands: Drawing made with pastel. Meaning: victory, pride, achieving success 6 of Pentacles: Photograph of artwork made with bamboo on cloth. Meaning: giving/receiving, offering/taking of advice, information, help, support, material means. The woman gives, the man receives what he needs. Temperance: Photograph of artwork made with bamboo on cloth. Meaning: moderation, balance, harmony, bringing together opposites, finding middle ground. Card Descriptions This year my cards are all Thoth-inspired: Tower The Tower is a card of transformation, brought about by destroying the old to build the new. The image of the Crowley-Harris –Thoth is transforming into the photo of a real Tower. The “all seeing eye” stepping out of the card into the real world as a manifestation of cosmic energy. Queen of Wands I started with Maria Leszczynska Queen Consort of France, Reading the Bible; portrait by Jean-Marc Nattier. As all monarchs of France have been required by law to be male, there has never been a queen or empress regnant of France. A queen consort acted as regent for her husband or children. Maria Leszczynska was a great lover of music and painting and the patron of many artists, she also started a correspondence with Voltaire, for whom she secured a pension. She is the Queen of the Thrones of Flame, so I added a volcanic image, with its red lava flow and the element symbol for fire. Her sign is Aries. She has a wand crowned with a pinecone, which is the weapon of the Maenads, which were followers of Dyonisus. The wand I took from the Crowley-Harris-Thoth, it resembles a phallus and is a symbol for satisfied lust. Queen of Cups This card is based on Elisabeth Christine Queen of Prussia; portrait by Antoine Pesne. Elisabeth Christine was interested in literature, she also wrote books herself, about morals, in French, and introduced silk cultivation to Prussia. She is the Queen of the Thrones of Water, so I changed the colors of the original portrait, modified the background to look like an underwater landscape and added an element symbol for water. Her sign is Cancer. The ibis is the symbol of Thoth, and thus a symbol of the intellect. The lotus in her right hand represents not only water but also emotions. Together the two symbolize the emotions overriding the intellect. Queen of Swords Marie Antoinette, the later queen of France, as a child; portrait by Martin van Meytens. She is the Queen of the Thrones of Air, so I made the background a bit more airy and added the appropriate element symbol. Her sign is Libra. I added the sword in her left hand which signifies analysis and the severed bearded head (which I took from the Crowley-Harris-Thoth), that represents old ways of thinking. Queen of Discs I borrowed Goya’s Maria Luisa of Spain the Queen of Etruria, for my Queen of the Thrones of Earth. Her zodiacal attribution is the Sun in Capricorn. I changed the background colors, added the ivy and a few symbols. In Thoth-geometrics the hexagram is the symbol of the sun, while the cube represents earth, thus the hexagram inside the cube symbolizes the fertility of the Earth as engendered by the Sun. The pope changed while I was working on this card so I had to change it to match the times! “Hierophant” literally means “the one who teaches the holy things. The card stands for religion and traditional education. The pope means seek guidance, to follow positive advice endorsed, to do the right thing, to have faith, to keep on the right side of God, to be a positive role model, to be disciplined in your approach to matters and to clear off negative karma. Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio) (3/13/2013 -) the 266th pope. Also included are Benedict XVI (Joseph Alois Ratzinger) 2005-2013; Bd. John Paul II (Karol Józef Wojtyła) (1978-2005); Servant of God John Paul I (Albino Luciani) (1978-1978); Ven. Pius XII (Eugenio Pacelli) (1939-1958), Saint Peter (33-67). Background is the Sala Regia, Vatican City. How many know who the SECOND Pope was? Everyone knows Peter was the first, but did you know that Saint Linus was the second? The deck is going to be soooo awesome this year. The cards are just wonderful. All of them. I can't wait! Here is the cover card. Hope it's received with love and light. The hummingbird was a frequent visitor to my kitchen window last year and the pink rose bloomed in my garden, which was much to my delight. My roses did well despite all the gloomy weather this year. Always both a sign that beauty and creativity will always prevail and endure. Just like our Tarot Collector deck seems to be doing. Will next year be our 5th year? Peering into the eyes of the soul, search for duality and the comfort of the other. My last card is ready. Here is the Hermit (plus write-up): Drawing made with pastel. Meaning: Introspection. A path leads from the darkness towards the light. LWB entries: Justice: The background shows a medieval text of canon law, exploring the idea how canon law and the perception of justice may be connected. I have included the kanji and hiragana signs for Justice for a transcultural approach. 8 of Swords: Entrapment, sometimes of one’s own making. All the tools are there within reach. It is a matter of courage as well as just figuring it out; this is where the symbolism of “taking your heart in your hands” is embodied here. 8 of Coins Skill, patience, and craftsmanship. Sometimes this looks like a very mundane card, full of nitty-gritty work, but there is so much joy in excelling at what you do and in shaping your workpiece. 8 of Wands Fast fire … these are the words that always come to me in connection with the 8 of Wands. It is a strong rush of passion or inspiration, fast communication or events unfolding like a force of nature. With all of these lies a danger to burn what should not be burned, or burn out too quickly. Card is a photograph of matches on scrapbook paper tweaked with Paint Sho Pro. 8 of Cups A moody card – turning away from something, not out of rational thought, but emotions. Like the moon cycles, this might just have been a matter of timing. The future lies uncharted as of yet, you might even have turned your back to something beautiful. The colibri shows that there is that erratic piece of memory that will always fly after you. |

The printer and I talked over lightening up all the cards when they were printed (easiest change), but the other cards were ok. I try not to do anything more than I have to, but sometimes its necessary. It may be just the differences in monitors. I learned that it is best to have the printer do a test run, that way I can see exactly what the cards look like, and sometimes it is enough different. |

Here is my card and descriptions I owe you. I only hope I am doing it correctly. My Description: The Emperor is a rule maker and regulator. He’s organized, systematic, commanding -- the epitome of the “establishment”. He makes and applies policies and guidelines and sets standards of behaviors for everyone to follow. The Emperor is likely to abandon the rights of the private citizen for the “greater good” of the community. J. Edgar Hoover held the position of Director of the FBI from 1924 to 1972 through the administration of six U. S. Presidents. Several Presidents, Congressmen, and Senators wished to fire Hoover, but declined to do so when they discovered the amount of private and sensitive information Hoover amassed about them, making him, in essence, more powerful than the Presidents and Congress of the United States. As director of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover had rabid anti-Communist and anti-subversive views and used unconventional tactics to monitor related activity, from infiltration, burglaries, illegal wiretaps, and planted evidence. Despite his unorthodox and even unethical methods, Hoover’s ability for public relations catapulted the FBI into a powerful organization that today has grown into a formidable worldwide and overall respected agency. I just mailed the hi-res versions of all my cards to skad1. Here is some bio and card description: Bio: I am located in Berlin, Germany, and I am still a newbee to tarot. It’s my second contribution to a collaborative deck. Creation of the Moon: The Background shows a tenement building located by a canal that used to have the Berlin wall on the other shore. So the water from the traditional moon is there, albeit invisible. The overlay collage was done using Paint Shop. Meaning of the Moon: Creepy things raising from your unconscious while you lie asleep at night. Creation of the Threes: All elements on the cards except the suit symbols were drawn by hand with the help of Corel Draw from several photos. Leaves and other elements that occur frequently have been cloned. I took the suit symbols from the Conver Marseille and changed the colors. Meaning of the Three of Swords (spring): pain, heartbreak, sorrow that results from knowledge, strong emotions in general, chance of healing Meaning of the Three of Batons (summer): power of will, efforts that are paying off Meaning of the Three of Cups (autumn): participating in the fullness of nature and life in general, harvest, satisfaction Meaning of the Three of Coins (winter): work, long term investment, development |
