I just lost an Ebay auction for a copy of the Jerry Kay Thoth Tarot. This was published in 1969 as a black and white pen drawn deck of 78 cards, presumably based on the Lady Frieda Harris designs.

Unfortunately I have never been able to see a copy of the Jerry Kay deck. If anyone has a copy could they please have a look and try and compare with the Lady Frieda Harris Thoth deck ? I would like to know if there are any major variations, or if Kay was making a fair copy in line drawings.

In looking at the picture you have posted the deck looks like a BOTA version of the thoth deck.I wonder if it was meant to be colored in the same way.The Six of Cups doesn't look anything like the Thoth deck so I expect most of the simularitys are in the Major arcana. It appears Mr. Kay followed Crowleys Book of Thoth in the decks atributions and symbology. The Hanged Man mimics Thoth preety well including the leg crossing (R.W. their reversed) and the Ankh (in the Thoth it's upside down) but has added the "hanging tree" borrowed from the Golden Dawn. The "hanging tree" is shaped like the Hebrew letter Tav and alludes to the cube of space and to the inner center of the square where Tav and Mem reside.Mem is the Hebrew letter usually associated with this card. The Universe card looks simular to the Thoth except that the serpent is seperated from the dancer and is not wraped around her.The four Kerbuic creatures are their as well but their depicted in the R.W. style. What little I can see of the Fool card does look like it resembles Thoth deck. The art work in the Thoth deck has always amazed me and the images are really complex and it would be hard to create a deck from it meant to be colored in without loosing some of its compexity. That being said Jerry Kay seems to have done an admirable job in attempting it.Someday maybe I'll be lucky enough to acquire one.......MIKE

There are some similarities, like the woman and the serpent on the Universe, a lot of the symbols on the Fool are also found on Harris's design, the outstretched arms on the Hanged Man, the ape on the Magus. It looks like Kay definitely drew inspiration from the Crowley/Harris deck, but's it's not an exact copy by any means. It's an interesting deck. Reminds me of the Hermetic Tarot.

I have a copy of the Book of Thoth Tarot by Jerry Kay and even though it is clearly based on the Crowley Thoth, I also found it to be different. There are quite some extra illustrations on most of the cards or things that are different. I haven't looked at it for a while, but I do remember thinking that at the time. It does look like it was for self-coloring.

First, I'd like to say "Hello!" ~as a new member, and then on to the good stuff... Jeremy Kay is a friend of mine, and I sent him the details of the eBay auction, to which her replied:

Thanx for the heads-up.  Amazing!  $416!  I'm surprised, but not really - as there were only about 100 Xeno sets, virtually hand-made / Signed? - Deluxe Sets (v.3) this one with Color Backs & Booklet on White Paper Stock.  Deck Owner was guided (in Book) to color / paint their decks to help memorize images.  Retailed in 1969 for $20. (Expensive)  I sold them all - kept only 1 or 2 sets, buried somewhere in storage along with my "Rosebud Sled" & "The Lost Ark".

Two other previous sets - Same basic Images.

(v.1) In Envelope with Black & Yellow Back Designs. Ltd 50 Sets?

(v.2) Different Plastic? & Cardboard Box with  Orange & Black on Back Designs.  Ltd. 50 Sets?

Best Regards,

~ JEREMY

*

I have a complete deck, mint as printed, coloured backs, in the plastic box, and with the book. Bought once upon a time for $40US. There's even a couple of extra (duplicate) cards, besides the regular extras. I also have a copy of Jeremy's later revision of the Majors, titled "The Book of Time" which is a 23 card set, with a few new, and original, attributions.

Kind regards,

Demian

Oh yes, and Jeremy does acknowledge a debt of gratitude and inspiration to the Lady Frieda Harris Tarot of the Egyptians, aka Thoth (which is, I think, pronounced as: thawth, or tot).

Jeremy Kay - Art Director "Easy Rider" etc.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0443077/

I especially remember seeing "Johnny Got His Gun"

which was a brilliant adaptation of Dalton Trumbo's

novel ~ beautiful, poignant, and true to the book.

So this is where the 'heavy hitters' hang out! I recognize several names from EBay!    I am a new member, and the crazy person who won the auction for the XENO deck! Looked like a cool deck, and just the fact that I had never seen it before made me think it must be pretty rare. Jeremy was kind enough to send me some info about the deck, which makes it even more interesting.

Hello,

is this "Book of Time" by Jeremy Kay a book or just another Tarot set?

Where is this available?

Thank you very much in advance!

Hello Vidar, Looking at the scans Jerry sent me, I would say there was a 24 page book made at one time, a booklet really, and whilst I have all the images (including covers) whether it was ever available in a general sense, I don't know. Here's a (trimmed) scan of the Table of Contents and "the card with no number, sometimes marked with a zero" ~enjoy! Demian

Hello Demian,

thank you for your fast answer!

If I understand you correctly "The Book of Time" was only a booklet which included all the images of the major arcana (some revised) of his previously released Tarot set?!

I suppose this booklet was sold separately...

Would it be possible to post a scan of the cover on this page?

Thank you again and best wishes!

Hello vidar, The back cover is solid red, and on the front it says:
Book No. 1 <of Eleven Books> 880927.

I know this was quite a while ago but I have recently been very intrigued by the woman on the front cover of The Book of Thoth. I can only find a few sources on the web, and all are not very great quality. Can you scan it for us?

The woman on the Book of Thoth cover ? The image on the Book of Thoth (the copy I have anyway) is just Frieda Harris' World card. It's all over the place to view: here's one source that is at least not ripping anyone off.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I am looking for a better resolution for the Jerry Kay Book of Thoth. Like this ...

All of the images I have found are not very clear.
