Rolla Nordic (deck and book) would be helpful too!

Hi there lulukat,

I have this deck too, and also a really interesting 25 page hand typed pamphlet put out by the Insight Institute, as the hand book to their self study Course #5, How to Read the Tarot. (which has a lot of detail sadly missing from Lind's later book How to Understand Tarot.)

I only seem to be able to attach one image per post, but let me know if you'd like to see some of the pages.

I can also highly recommend this website - http://www.wopc.co.uk/tarot/index.html

It would seen our decks, and my pamphlet, are very likely to predate the 1970 date given in the "mkg timeline".

I love this deck, despite the mishmash of sources for its imagery, namely; trumps 2, 3, 4, + 19 are from PC Smith; trumps 16, 17, + 18 are from JP Mayer; and I'm sure I've seen the Chariot somewherelse too, with its very distinctive feature of the two horses looking at each other and clicking their hooves!; the remaining trumps are all pretty much standard TdM, while the courts are from a Minchiate deck. Yet both Lind, and later Gardner, both claimed this deck to be "authentic" (?)

Anyway, great deck and you look as though you've got a real nice copy.

Cheers Sumada

...the key to lulukat's questions seems to be the backs...

I just sold  an R.G. tarot on my e-bay store for 50.00 just recently. It was in pretty decent shape but not fine enough to where I felt comfortable charging any more then that.I had it listed for about 2 months  before it sold and I had a lot of people "watching" the list so their was some interest in it.I had originally bought it site unseen with a bunch of other tarot in a "lot" sale. For the longest time I didn't know what it was until I posted a few cards and asked around......

Also interesting is that the "t" or tau that you see at the top of the cards are printed slightly different on all the cards.

OK...I'll own up. It was me! Now I've got all three, or soon will have thanks to tantricknite.

Maybe there's even more versions out there (?), but for now, these are the only three I've ever seen.

Cheers, Sumada

I scanned the majors of the II deck, in case anyone is curious:

I have two copies of the II deck, with the eye on the back.  I have ordered the Frank Lind book to find out more about it, but the small booklet looks interesting and I'd be grateful for a hint as to where to find a copy.  Google is most uninformative about the deck and it's taken me until this thread to find out what the decks are at all.  Couldn't find anything anywhere.

Note to self: improve googling skills!

In comparing the two decks it looks like the imagies are the same but that the cards are colored differently. Look at the devil card from the R.G. and it's dark green but the I.I. is colored with a lighter shade...

The first printing is HUGELY paler green - positively pastel by comparison. That is what I have been saying all down this thread or was it the other (I wish they would merge....) I am betting the II backed one is as well....

I have the II deck and pamphlet as well, and I agree with Sumada that it likely predates 1970. It is interesting from a collector's standpoint in that the cards have raised printing, which implies a non-commercial, or at least minimally commercial, printing process. The cards feel kind of "grainy".

I couldn't believe my eyes when I unpacked this deck.

This is from the reverse of the box:

This is an authentic set of 78, 15th century, English Tarot Cards. The originals are in the British Museum.

None of the cards has been altered or adorned in any way. Serious students should beware of adulterated packs : so often precious secrets have been omitted or destroyed.

The text on the side of the box states:

ENGLISH TAROT CARDS
AUTHENTIC AND ORIGINAL COLOURS

And on the front of the box:

AUTHENTIC
ENGLISH TAROT CARDS
ORIGINAL DESIGN

Talk about brass neck. And where was Trading Standards in 1974? (Date of my deck).

Having said all of the above, I do like the damned thing - it's just so wrong (if not fraudulent)  to mislead people like this.

Are you referring to the English Fortune Telling Cards or the RG deck?

Mine are titled 'Authentic English Tarot Cards' on the box front, R.G. Tarot Cards on the box ends. They have the creature with the Insight  banner on the backs, although the Insight Institute isn't mentioned anywhere as far as I can see. The cards themselves look exactly the same as the scans above, although the colours are bright red, yellow and green rather than pastel. Rigel Press, 1974.

OK, so who just won the II deck on Ebay that sold for $115? No original box, though.

Re: "Course 5: How to Read the Tarot" by Frank Lind (Insight Institute) - see photo earlier in thread. The copy shown here has an address of 6018 Springvale Dr., Los Angeles for obtaining BOTA cards. Case moved from that address in 1944. I'm not sure when he first moved in - mid-to-late 1930s? Which gives us a rough date for "Course 5."
