The Hermit looks particularly familiar; I suspect a Japanese or Taiwanese deck, myself, but.....

My first thought when seeing the Magician was the Connolly deck. But no, that is not it. I am afraid I can't quite place it.

Even the publisher doesn't know:

This is an image we licensed for use for the cover of the book. Since this is the third email asking about the deck, we are attempting to track down the artist to ask if the deck is published. We will let you know if we hear back from her.

Our Best,

I was on my way. *pants gently*

I now have an e-mail from the artist - one Darla Hallmark - it is coloured images from her deck, from a colouring book, the Friendly Tarot, long oop.

She was wondering about reissuing it if there is demand. I said please do the deck. She is in the process of signing up to AT. She will be visitable there as soon as she is validated.

ETA - NOW I have heard from the publisher of the book in question:

Just heard from the artist. We are in negotiation to publish. – 7th House
YEA !!!!

Email is a wonderful thing, something be praised !

Ahhhh.. no wonder it was so familiar to me! I kept on thinking, I KNOW that deck! I have the Friendly Tarot (took it out of the colouring book). So that is why.

So the artists name is Darla Hallmark.. good, I can add that to my database/info. The only thing I knew about the author was the initials DH.

Uh oh.. I guess now I have to get the new edition too.

It was a colouring book, but with the deck as punch-out cards. Take the cards out and you have no book left... hehe.

And I punched them out. :cl

My notes say that the Friendly Tarot was by Cy Stapleton and published by House of Gutenberg.  (spiral bound, self published, 1993).  Could Darla Hallmark be the artist of only the book cover illustration?

Darla is the artist of all the cards, Cy was just the publisher. He is no artist.

I am not about to quote a private e-mail, but I know this for a fact.

That makes scense, the cover does say drawn by DH.   The xxxxxxxxxx was a photo copywrite protection thingy.

Is there another Friendly tarot?

Nope, I didn't. Then again, I always like black&white decks, so that is why I don't want to colour them.

I bought my copy of Cy Stapleton on Ebay. You probably did too, because I think he is the only one who sells copies. I never really thought he was the artist though, because I noticed the Dh on the front cover. So I put in my database that the artist was Dh, whoever it might be. And now I know who Dh is.

On AT the artist wrote that there was another by the same name so she intends to bring them out with a new title. Sorry for the confusion!

I'm not really positive that there is another deck out called "The Friendly Tarot".  I just seem to remember one coming and going briefly in the 90's.  So, I figure it will be best to just use a different name for the new, full color version.

The coloring book shown is my work, including all of the text.  I'm pleased to see so many people are still interested in my artwork, even after all these years.

I am currently re-drawing the deck in full color, for publication later this year.

The cards in the photo on the book cover are from a deck I drew by hand, and the photo is used with my permission through a stock photo site.  (I do a little photography on the side)

Any questions, just ask!

I saw the spiral bound Friendly Tarot for sale years ago at a Renaissance Festival, where the Gutenberg Press had a shop (Scarborough Faire in TX).  It is offered on Ebay occasionally for $35, apparently by someone who happened to have a bit of leftover stock. I am happy to say that I got lucky and obtained mine at Half Price Books for $4.95.  Woo hoo!

I too saw that colored illustration, loved the cards, but never connected them with the b&w Friendly Tarot. I'd love a color copy!

What's the timeline for release of the colored deck, then, for this impatient roiling tarot mob?? :D

I don't think there is any other deck called the Friendly Tarot. Except yours. At least, to my knowledge. But I can understand that you would change the name just in case. I am keeping the B&W version in my database as the Friendly Tarot though :D

And I love the work you are doing on colouring the cards! I most definately will purchase a copy!

I don't see a problem with duplicate names, especially if they are a colored and a b/w deck of the pretty much the same images.  Think of how many "Dragon" decks there are, or Angel, or Art Nouveau, or  Astrological (or versions thereof), or Celtic, or Egyptian, or Marseilles, or Sacred, or Universal, or Witches OR "The World's smallest..."  See what I mean?  In fact I prefer the names be the same if they are basically the same images.

My concern is that the original publisher of the black and white version may, if he sees money, make himself a problem.

He no longer has  any rights to the work at all, but I figure, why stir him up?

If I was self-publishing this, I would call it the Friendly Tarot, and dare him to say something, so I could throw lawyers at him (which I would love to do).  But, I don't think it would make a good impression on a new publisher to have a crazy old publisher make a stink, even if he doesn't have a leg to stand on.

The man has a long history of "seeing what he can get away with".

Besides, I still think there was a different deck, by another artist and publisher, by that name.  I can't find any such deck, but it is still in the back of my mind that it exists.

Oh, if you feel that way about the old publisher, then I can fully understand giving the deck a new name. The old publisher is also the one still selling the decks on Ebay, right? I had some problems with him when I bought my second copy (which he didn't send initially:?). And yeah, it is better to start fresh and new with a new publisher then.
