Oooh, one of my favourite subjects. Debra said in another thread (thus inducing Pen to buy this deck):

Quid, I was browsing Somerville's site (instead of working) and found these lovely I-Ching cards. They brought to mind the transformation cards you've mentioned; in this case it is the hexagrams that are integrated into the images.

And golly Debra, I have this deck in my 13-deck collection of I Ching. Hey, do we need a visual?

SURE! Room for one more. If anyone finds the deck discussed in this thread (NOT the book, but the deck mind you):

Let me know, please, I've got a space for it. I just made a couple of simple tuckboxes this week for 2 of the I Ching decks that came in awkward packaging, so while fiddling with the cards and getting them lined up in their special section on the shelf, I updated my visual.

I made a mental note note not to visit the non-tarot section in case I was sucked in, and look what happened. The little man on the front of the I Ching pack does have a stick and a bundle though... Trying not to look at those images of yours above, Quid.

Resistance is futile! Let me know if you want close-ups. :P

In all seriousness though, I Ching seems like a necessary component of human awareness to me. Sounds bit la-dee-da, but you can't go wrong buying a few of these decks, especially if the artwork speaks to you in some way.

Several of these little gems are OOP now, so I feel fortunate to have found them. Even the Irish Fairies deck, which sounds pretty hokey, is sound in its I Ching approach. I've got that little pig on card 49 in my example on the tuckbox I made for the deck. I then put that into a wooden box which I have decided to paint up a bit at some point when I winnow down the 30 projects I'm doing now.

You could do boxes too Pen. Nice painted boxes or boxes featuring a sharp looking linocut Fool. . . .

Quid, I'd love to make/decorate boxes, return to refine my etching, lithography, bookbinding, calligraphy and so many other techniques I've experimented with in the past, but with me, there's the danger of scattering my limited creativity too wide.  I'm working on three quite different tarots at the moment and using the design for the little Fool (ink on white scraperboard) I posted in the Happy New Year thread to feel about in different media. There'll be a whole school of them by the time I've decided on one!

(A School of Fools? Sounds OK, but maybe there's a better collective noun? Ship of Fools clearly won't do, but then maybe Fools are solitary/singular? Stop rambling, Pen...)

How about a Pack of Fools since they like to skip about with dogs so much? There is also the secondary association with a pack of cards.

"Ink on scraperboard" is what we call scratchboard in North America I think? Have you seen Lorena Moore's Ironwing Tarot, Pen? She used scratchboard--she's one of the most exceptional artists I've ever seen.

"Scattering creativity too wide' (I refuse to call your creativity "limited"!) is a great phrase. It does happen to me--I can come up with an idea in minutes and then spend years trying to translate it into concrete form as it gets shoved out of my mind by new ideas. Frustrating.

I like the sound of your "three quite different tarots" myself. I've never been interested in drawing tarot cards for some reason. You'd think I would since I have such a collection, but I find working with the archetypes limiting and irritating, so I very much admire the freshness of the artists here and their dedication and imaginative skill toward interpreting tarot. It's a gift people have, for sure.

Quid,

I didn't realize that the Ironwing was created with scratch/scraperboard - that does explain its very bright/sharp/clear quality. Yes, I admire it (and Lorena) too - not least for creating a beautifully designed and drawn tarot with no resemblance whatsoever to any other.

Re. those Fools: I remembered that my mother told me once that my grandfather used to take the Joker out of a new pack of cards and burn it. I just asked her why and she said that after an evening out drinking and playing cards till the early hours he dreamt that the Joker was pulling him out of bed for the rest of the night. Must have been some nightmare to create such a compulsion.
