Poking around the world of ex libris, came upon another set of tarot majors executed as color etchings, this one by the artist Sergei Udovichenko (originally Ukrainian, now living in Israel).

The attached samples give only the barest impression of the astonishing intricacy of the art. I've included a link to a much higher res version of the scans. Be aware that it's almost 1MB in size, but definitely worth it to get a better idea of the amazing detail of these works. (And even at that resolution, I don't imagine it really does them justice.)

High resolution version.

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about the world of ex libris collecting to know whether it would ever be practical (or affordable) to try to accumulate a full set.

Anybody else know anything about them?

Wow, WOW!  These are amazing.

Another whole area of art to go poking around in.  I don't know if that's a good thing or not,  or just expensive.

I tried looking on the web to see if I could find out any more about these etchings, and I was pretty much not able to find anything.  Where would you even find info on them, much less buy them?

Actually, it may be even less. Each of the individual pieces were commissioned by different people and the person doing the commissioning selects the edition size. At least one of them I'm aware of (thanks Papageno!) is an edition of only 60. (There are also typically some additional artists proofs which may or may not eventually find their way out into the world.)

These are indeed wonderful images. You can see a wide range of Sergei Udovichenko's work on this web page

Some of the points made in another thread about "professional art" have left me thinking about this one.

Given the huge number of more readily available decks out there, does anyone else think this "deck" is worth the added bother and expense of hunting down all of the individual cards?
And then, to what extent?
It looks like it would cost a bit of money.

A number of collectors seem to have budgets that allow for the purchase of many, many, many decks.
So it seems that often the money is there, but to some degree one must choose whether to spend it on one deck, or several.

So how much do we think one should be willing to spend on this one?
Would people prefer to have a dozen or so other scarce decks instead?
Would those others "say" more about tarot than this one?

Well, maybe it's just the holiday rush, but it looks like no one has much to say about this deck...

So I'll just jump in and say THANK YOU OnePotato for the fabulous Christmas gift! Having the full set of these cards is quite something. They are absolutely stunning in person...but I do need my reading glasses to get the full effect.

Best Tarot present of the year!

Last year I did approach one of the sellers of these Ex Libris bookplates and asked if I could buy a complete set. He said this was not possible. I then monitored a few of the Ebay auctions of the individual etchings, but decided it was too expensive and also rather difficult to be sure of being able to buy the entire set on a  one-by-one basis.
I then tried to contact the artist directly through a gallery which seemed to represent him, but with no response.

So I salute OnePotato's tenacity in obtaining a complete set. Now at least one member of the Tarot collectors community has this set. I suppose most of these will instead be in the hand of the Fine Art  and Ex Libris collectors.

After about a year of hunting around, I had managed to buy 12 of them.
About half of those were from ebay.
When I started, I did not know if I would ever find them all, but I didn't let that stop me.
A dealer told me it was impossible because the owners of a few of the editions would not let them go.
So those particular cards could only be found as a very small number of artist's proofs, perhaps only five or ten copies.
(But he wouldn't tell me which ones.)

Then a random inquiry with a dealer met with a reply that he knew of a full set for sale, "...if the price was right..."
I said, "Name it."
He did.
And I paid it.
At this point in the story, it would be nice if I could brag about what a bargain it was, but instead, let's just skip ahead...

Anyway, Udovichenko's technical ability is just absurdly marvelous.
And conceptually, this has got to be one of the densest decks ever conceived.
The net result is like a thunderbolt in your hand.

Someone of normal middle-aged eyesight needs a magnifying glass to see the detail in these images.  It's incredible.

I mean, like, 6x magnification--2x won't do.

I have a question about how many cards there are in the series. It seems to me that there are 24 with the cover card, however, just discovered that two of my different cards actually have "The Empress" and "L'imperatrice" written on it. Does anyone know how La Papesse looks like?

Hi Forkissima.

As far as I know, there are 22 plus a cover image.
The cover has a large planetary globe on it, more or less.

Here is II The Priestess:

Thank you, OnePotato for posting the picture, this is exactly what I'm talking about. I have this card as a duplicate, the backside says "Priestess" but if you look on the bottom right of the card with a magnifying glass, it clearly says "L'imperatrice". So according to the card, this is not the Priestess but the Empress.

Is this card a member of the tarot series?

Yes, I've also noticed the "L'Imperatrice" inscription within The Priestess. It's confusing, but I believe it refers to an intended link between II Priestess and III Empress. The unusual shapes of the frames may also be related to this concept. They are strongly linked. If you look at the overall imagery, they do both make sense.

The other picture you posted is The Fool.

Here is III The Empress:

Thanks, OnePotato! The Fool is going to be a real challenge to find, as it has been printed in only a few copies but going well with the rest :cl
