The Tarot of Leonora Carrington, one of the most significant surrealist artists, has now been published, both as a book and also as a set of cards. Carrington created her tarot in 1955 but it remained hidden amongst her papers till it was recently discovered and is now published by Fulgur in the UK.
The imagery is for the most part quite conventional, though in her own style, with a few visual quotes from some of her paintings and drawings.
Yes, I have them on order and am looking forward to spending time on them, but wish she could have allowed her vivid imagination to come more into play.
Carrington created her tarot designs in 1955, long before the explosion of modern tarot decks with their re-envisaging of tarot imagery. She relied on the conventional forms, but did work them in her own pictorial language.
For its time I think Carrington's designs were quite progressive and imaginative.
