to my works. And for that I point the Tower, is but because the Queen
majesty and her honourable council should have the more assurance for
the accomplishing of my promise, and none otherwise.
The Oxford Man
What and it please the Queen majesty to send, ere a two of the council
for their honours’ pleasure to come and see your works, after they be set
up and to satisfy her highness what manner a thing it is?
Master Charnock
I am very well content that it should so be, within one quarter after my
works be perfectly set. And then their honours shall see as much as is
convenient to be seen which is the regiment of my fires.
The Oxford Man
You have fully answered me in this. But I pray you Master Charnock
what commodity or profit shall the Queen majesty have by your 4 works
at the seven years end, for this eight hundred £?
Master Charnock
I will present unto the Queen majesty at the seven years end, God sparing
her highness life and me to give the very true and perfect philosophers’
stone, the most precious jewel of the world, which shall be a preservator
of her health, and a prolonging of her grace’s most royal life.
The Oxford Man
I pray you let me hear the virtue of this stone which the philosophers
doth so much estimate for this high and mighty virtue?
Master Charnock
It hath virtue to heal all manner of diseases above all medicines of
physick: And it gladdens the mind, it conserves youth, it renews age, it
will not suffer blood to putrefy, neither flame to have domination, neither
colour to burn, neither melancholy to be exalted, it multiplies blood
above measure, it purges any corruption contained in the spiritual
members, it preserves all members of the body generally as well hot as
cold, it expels all ill humours and brings good in place, it heals generally
