The Oxford Man

A lack it is pity, that you do detract the time so long, but to find some
means whereby the Queen majesty and her honourable council may
understand, what you are able to do in that most secret science of natural
philosophy as I do judge, for that I never heard your like?

                                  Master Charnock

I think the Queen majesty will neither go to the charges, nor it will not
tarry the length of time, which the work will ask from his beginning until
it be fully complete and ended: and or ever her highness shall have any
commodity or profit by the same. But if it will please the Queen majesty
and her honourable council, for a true trial of this science, to set it a work
by me, I will for the love that I have to this science, and for a truth which
I understand to be in the same, undertake to bring it to pass in the time
hereafter specified, upon pain of losing of my head.

                                   The Oxford Man

Why, what sum of money would you ask of the Queen majesty, to get
together all things necessary to your work, and to bear yours and your
servants charges who shall help you to attend upon the same, and also the
charges for maintenance of your work, from the beginning until it be
ended or brought to pass?

                                  Master Charnock

I will demand for the setting up and maintenance of 4 works so
reasonable as is possible, and after […] rate that one work stood me in
which was a hundred £ in a five year, at too sundry times, so by this
account it will ask in seven year eight hundred £ with the least, and so
long it will be or the Queen majesty shall have any commodity or profit
by the same.

                                   The Oxford Man

After what sort I pray you let me learn, for it no marvel then, that the
philosophers do write, saying haec scientia pauperi et egenti non
connenit, sed potius est illis inimica?3
