The Lord shall smite thee with madness, and blindness, and astonishment
of heart.”

Therefore a great fool were he that would presume to cure these
plagues of pestilence that be incurable, that be sent of God to punish sin.
Also you shall understand that men may die in three manners. In one
manner by natural death in the term that is set of God. In another manner
by violent death. And also in the third manner occassionally within the
term that is set of God. As those men that by too much repletion, or too
great abstinence or by desperation, or else by negligence, slay
themselves. But certainly all other manner of fevers pestilence that God
suffers to come to mankind by perilous influence of evil planets, by the
grace of God and good governance may be cured partially with our
quintessence. And therein put a little of Aloes Epatic, and Eurphorbium,
and a little of Hiera picra Galieni [a purgative drug composed of aloes
and canella bark], and of quintessence, of the root of lilies and also of
gold and pearls, capilli veneris, and Hysope. For these things be needful
to such fevers and apostemes. It is needful also that with these things
there be such a quinta essentia laxative that will purge the superfluous
humours that abound. And that the patient so much receive in a natural
day thereof that he may go well once to stool, and so let him use this
laxative thrice in the week. But be well wary that he take with our quinta
essentia but right a little quantity of the laxative at once, as I told you
heretofore, for peril that might befall. And every day take he by the
morning an eggshell full of good burning water, and the corrupt air shall
not annoy him, and also use in the days two or three small pills
pestilencial in our quintessence, or in burning water. And all the house of
the patient shall be incensed strongly four (times) in the day with
frankincense, myrrh and resin turpentine and rue. And this is perfect cure
for the fever pestilence.

And thus you may with this quintessence cure all these sicknesses
aforesaid, and many others, as it were by miracle, if you work discretely
as I have told you heretofore.

Now here I make an end of this treatise that is called the most and
the sovereignest secret of all secrets, and a surpassing treasure that may
not fail.

O many great evils will befall, if this book falls into the hands of
wicked men, or to the notice of tyrants, and into the service of
