     Here begins the second book of medicines. The first medicine is to
reduce an old feeble evangelic man to the first strength of youth. Also to
restore again his nature that is lost, and to lengthen his life in great
gladness and perfect health unto the last term of his life that is set of
God. You shall take our quinta essentia aforesaid, that is to say, manâ€™s
heaven, and therein put a little quantity of quinta essentia of gold and of
pearl. And the old feeble man shall use this divine drink at morning and
at evening, each time a walnut shell full. And within a few days he shall
so heal that he shall feel himself of the state and the strength of a forty
year old, and he shall have great joy that he is come to the state of youth.
And when his youth is recovered, and his nature restored, and health had,
it is needful that little and seldom he use quintessence. Also it is needful
that he use often good wine at his meat and at the supper, in the which be
fixed the quintessence of gold as I taught you heretofore.

     The second medicine is to heal a man, and make him live, that is
almost consumed in nature, and so nigh dead that he is forsaken by the
doctors. But if it be the last term of his life set of God, you shall give him
our quintessence of gold with a little quantity of water of celandine
drawn, and mingle it with the other things aforesaid, and anon as the sick
have received it into his stomach, it gives to the heart influence of natural
heat and of life, and then you shall see him rise up and speak, and
wonderfully be comforted and strengthened thereby. Then comfort him
with ministration of our quinta essentia aforesaid, and he shall be all
healed, but if it be that God will notwithstanding that he shall die. And I
say to you truly, that this is the highest majesty that may be in
transmutation of mankind. For right few doctors now living know this
secret.
