Adam McLean's Study Courses In 1999 I issued my first course. After a quiet start it began to become quite well subscribed. This encouraged me to produce more courses and over the next years I was able to produce a number of study courses. In 2007-2008 I noted that some of these courses were being pirated on various websites and in compilations. I tried to have these removed from these sites, but it was an uphill struggle and in 2009 I decided I had had enough and would give up producing any further study courses. As it takes at least three months work for me to create a course, it was madness to have my modest income decimated by pirates. It was not an easy decision to take but I had no alternative. Recently I have been testing various methods for digital rights management in the hope that I would find a simple system that is not difficult for my users, and yet protects my courses against being pirated by the unscrupulous. So I am again able to work on producing new study course material. The files originally in pdf format are now in specially formatted exe files with a built in reader with digital rights management. These files work on all Windows systems but at the moment not on Macintosh computers. They require no installation of files nor do they need a password - just click to open. When you buy one of my courses you receive an authorisation code then you download the file. The authorisation code is used only once and locks the file to your IP address. In order to read the file you have to be connected to the internet when opening it. You can move it onto your laptop or another computer that you use provided they are on the same IP address. I have had to remove the ability to print out the files, as the unscrupulous can easily print to virtual printers and create an entirely open pdf file which they can then pirate. Sorry but I cannot allow this to happen. These restrictions may seem unfair to the user but they are the only way to protect my intellectual property and will allow me to work on other study courses without fear of them being pirated. I cannot find another way to do this. I have reduced the price of these courses which are no longer being sent out on CD-Roms.
